Seeker Drones

By migs6000, in Game Masters

So I have my PCs about to enter into a space battle with a well equipped bounty hunter. His ship is heavily modified but I wanted to add something else. So I thought drones. Basically sending out a minion group to really just harass and be a nusiance. And it seems these haven't really been used before so I guess I have to create my own. Anyone have any ideas that could help?

If you want recon and surveillance;

Dangerous Covenant pg 57, Arakyd Industries Recon Remote

If you want a something to actually attack just take a minion group stat block and reskin it. Why make it complicated ya know?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Just seeing if anyone had done it before.

I'd use a swoop or speeder bike profile, reskinned with a droid brain You don't want to use a non-vehicle or they won't be able to do damage to the PC's ship.

Unless they have another method of attack that isn't conventional weaponry of course. Like Buzzdroids or something....

Buzzdroids?!?!? *carefully reigns in his temper and chants "do not rant, do not rant, do not rant, do not..." *

But seeker drones needs to be fairly large to be realistic. Something about 1/4 to 1/3 the size of a fighter is reasonable. If your drone is smaller, it wouldn't be able to do as much damage for its mass as an equivalent-sized missile or torpedo. Also, why not ECM drones? Small, nimble, very little firepower, but able to scramble shields a bit, or throw off targeting sensors, or maybe just be sensor ghosts so the players have to track by eye instead of sensor to differentiate between the drone signatures and the bounty hunter's ship.

When designing something like a drone, you have to ask yourself why the manufacturers designed it and why someone bought it rather than just using some explosives of similar size (and no doubt less cost). If the only answer you come up with is "It seems cool" then you're probably losing some verisimilitude.

Buzzdroids for example. Putting them in a missile makes zero sense. You can do far more damage with a warhead the size of the droid then the droid could ever hope to do. Grrrr.... must not rant, must not rant, must not...

Well, buzz-droids are pretty good at ripping up a ship. With good programming and specific instructions, it makes more sense for a bounty hunter to launch those at a ship than risk a more straightforward ship-to-ship fight that could injure or kill either party.

Yeah, I just looked up buzz droids. I may do those but change some things.

Because practicality is thrown out the window in a space opera.
