Hello, Im leaving Warmachine because frankly I'm terrible at it! I was just curious as to what is the learning curve on armada? Lots of special rules? Is it faced paced? And lastly this is a speculation question but do you think Armada is here for a long haul?
Warmachine player thinking about switching to Armada
Learning curve is medium.
Not alot of special rules.
A game last 2 hours but players alternate play so time flies quickly.
Of course it is here for a long haul.
As a veteran of Warmachine, Warhammer, and Lotr miniatures, I can say that Armada is literally 20 times easier to learn (just looking at how many rules in the rulebook there are) and more fun! I'm liking Armada the best because of the amazing models and it seems just as tactical and strategic without all the nit pickyness of Warmachine. My favorite part though, is the grand scale of Armada. I always felt like Warmachine was too skirmishy for me.
You can still paint the minis and keep the hobby aspect, or just focus on the game without feeling overwhelmed.
Yeah, the great thing about Armada compared to the classic miniature hobby is that you don't need much prep work before you can play. Just about everything is already done other than punching out cardboard pieces and putting together your command dials/maneuver stick. With that being said, you could pretty easily still play Warmachine and Armada.
Nit pickiness. I like that. It definitely describes Warmachine. A buddy used to call it very crunchy. I loved the game but despite its rigid and particular rules that were generally very clear, warmachine has a TON of things to keep track of. Armada is far simpler but may have more rewarding depth because of it. The objective system is cleaner than Warmachines as well.

I played D&D for many years.(Mild crunch at best) Then I tried the Dresden Files RPG(Fate system, as rules lite as games get...)) and realized how much I hate running to a rulebook to work out how exactly everything interacts and what the differwnces are between this thingy and this thingy are. Then I got stuck in a Shadowrun Campaign...
Anyway, my point is, elegant design is better than precise design. And this game is elegant.(as is X-Wing)
Agreed, Nit Pickiness hit the nail on the head! Well I'm looking forward to my jump into Armada! Thanks for the insight guys
I played Warmachine and enjoyed it.... however, as soon as Armada hit the shelves I worked out a trade with my FLGS and traded in all my WM stuff all in for it.... And I'm not turning back ![]()

Me too. Used the credit to get all of Wave one Imperial Assault, X-wing dice, and Armada core set.
Welcome to Armada. You have just taken your first step into a larger world. May the Force be with you!
As said, the game is simpler but there is a lot of depth that doesn't have to deal with memorizing every little possible combo that the VAST array of warmachine abilities can be fit into in order to result in some assassination you had no way of predicting
I actually may the warmachine objectives, though. Having them generate randomly independently of the list puts no stress on the points bid and places emphasis for lists on both sides of the conflict to slug it out in the middle.
I like to think that Armada is more elegant - less rules but a lot of depth to the strategy and tactics you employ (in a full 300 pt game, not so much in smaller games).
I play WM and like it, but Armada is a lot more fun IMO. One of the things I dislike about WM and similar games is waiting 10+ mins whilst your opponent decimates your army - its boring and a little demoralising. Because you takes turns activating in Armada, this simply is not an issue - it makes the game more interactive and forces you to make tough tactical decisions (e.g. do you activate ship 1 to get in an alpha strike, ship 2 to move it to safety, or ship 3 to grab that objective).
Well there is no page 5 to use as a cludgel on new players either. At least that's how it was way back in 1st edition Warmachine. Man....what a time...
I play Warmachine, X-Wing, and Armada. Of the three, I feel Warmachine is the most focused on exact measurements and Armada is almost in the exact opposite camp. Armada plays very casually in my area. I don't hate it, but if I'm looking for a good, competitive game, I'll grab my X-Wing or Warmachine first.
I'm still on the fence about how much I'll spend on Armada. The starter box only meta has soured a lot of people in the area and if I can't get a game in, I don't buy the game.
