Smaller Small Ship Stand

By Thalomen, in Star Wars: Armada

I've been thinking about the small ships. Now that there are begining to be in scale or near scale alternatives for the CR-90 and others, Im begining to think the foot print of the small stand is too big.

What about a stand exactly like the fighter stands in X-Wing but with legs on it so it is compatable with the Armada manuever tool? I would make it with a peg just like the one on the Armada fighter stands, but without the arrow at the bottom.

That way, if you want a CR-90 swarm, it actually becomes possible. Tiny ships using that stand (CR-90, GR-75, Carrack, etc.) become far more manueverable, zipping in and out of the way of bigger ships.

Thoughts?

I agree the three stands should have been more different from each other. Pretty much every ship for the Small Ship Stand is going to feel too small for that base size (transports and corvettes). While pretty much every large ship is going to feel too big for the large stands. Just look at the size of the ISD and the stand.

I can see how the shield dials seemed to dictate the size, but they could still have made it much smaller without causing the dials to rub against each other.

Well my suggestion for extra small ships is a little odd. How about mounting them to a flat 3cm x 5cm x 3mm rectangular base with the notches for moving in it. Then using a 1/8 flight peg with shield/hull dial in the center. The ship uses hit points like a fighter stand, moves like a capital ship, and unlike fighter stands it can be targeted like other ships. So essentially they have a single arc for attack purposes, and for defense. They move after larger ships, but before fighters.

If we went that route, why not just use the fighter stands? The extra requires to much of a change to the rules for new movement phase and the hull points. But it would be less expensive. My solution doesnt require a rules change but would certainly cost more.

I went that route, although I mounted them on 40mm circular flight stands instead of 30mm just to show they are bigger. Otherwise they function just like a fighter flight with capital scale hit points.

I don't understand the point. What's the problem? It's all abstract anyways.

Sounds very interesting. But I'm interested in the firing arcs. Not all of them have the same amount of die. How would you differentiate the firing arcs?

Are you saying that shields and hull points should be combined?

That would throw game balance out of the window.

Yes, I combined the hull/shields into a single value. Game balance is currently being adjusted. The fire arcs can still be drawn on the disk, but I generally only gave the ship a single attack value for all arcs. As a group we have been messing around with all sorts of things. Its just for fun.

Have you played a game using this set up yet? Id like to keep in contact with you about your modifications. Perhaps your gaming group and mine can exchange ideas.

Wouldn't it be better to just put multiples of the same ship on its current base (corvette comes to mind) ? Then balance doesn't get messed with, and you can still feel like it makes sense.

That was my original idea. The problem there is that it requires the top half of a fighter stand, or a new peg with the fighter top and the small ship peg bottom. No one is making that on shapeways at the moment.

Ya the small ship Squadron on standard base idea would also work. Depends on what visual you want really. Either way it would work.
