No StarVipers at the tables, no StarViper talk ....

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

you can't really "react" to super Dash with special-ks, considering they can neither boost nor roll :P

if you want to hunt down Dash, Xizor's your guy (V.I, FCS, thrusters; Inertial if you're cheeky or Predator w/sensors + thrusters if you have a bid in your squad)

Yeah but half the power of high PS post maneuver dial movement is that you can see where your opponent is going and counter it. If you get PS on Dash/give the Dash player initiative you can force him to use his boost and barrel roll to try and predict where you're going instead of just seeing that you've pointed your ship's arc left and boosting and barrel rolling right. That's what I hate most about Dash, often no matter how I maneuver my ship he can often just boost and barrel roll out of the arc and still shoot me no matter what. That was the thing I hated most about the pre-nerf phantom.

It's like facing a post nerf Phantom if you have PS on Dash, you know he's locked into one decloak and can't just decloak the other way.

I used to think the Starviper was pretty terrible until I saw Theorist fly one. Then I realized I wasn't flying to its strengths. After practicing with them for a while and learning how to build squads that work together with Starvipers, I've begun to really like them.

I think wave 7 will bring ships that go better with a pair of starvipers.

I think it was the Vassal log on this page: http://teamcovenant.com/theorist/2015/06/26/tc-open-elimination-round-3/, but I'm not positive 'cause I can't run Vassal at work. It would be the Theorist vs MrSunol list. MrSunol was running what is an illegal list (but legal for this tournament).

His list was:

Luke w/ VI, ACD, FT

Wes w/ VI, ACD, FT

Wedge w/ R2-D2, VI, ACD, FT

Theorist was running:

3 Cartel Spacers w/ HLC

Black Sun Enforcer w/ Shield Upgrade & Flechette Torpedo

Basically Theorist lost all his Cartel Spacers right away and won the match just with his Black Sun Enforcer. That match was particularly amazing, but all his matches were quite interesting.

If there were a way to PS bid over Fel and Han 100% of the time I would take that starviper but relying on say, Guri and hoping my opponent is running generics strikes me as wishful thinking. I think maybe Bossk or the generic YV and 2 starvipers might be a viable build, though.

One thing I like about the StarViper is that there are only 2 small-based ships in the game that have a hard 1-turn and a 1-straight. The StarViper is one and the B-Wing is the other, but its hard turns are red.

Being able to take those tiny movements and then adjust with barrel-roll and boost is so effective. It's good at getting close to ships and then maneuvering behind them due to the limited turns of other ships.

there is

V.I + Virago + FCS + thrusters Xizor is 37 points

5 Pirates are 60

you have a 3 point bid which, given that the typical Fel and Han builds have been cloned more times than the old repulbic's troopers, basically guarantees you the choice of initiative.

Guri and Fel are more or less equal (player skill aside). The advantage that Guri has is that in any head on confrontation, all Guri has to do is pick the spot Fel wants to go in (after the completely ineffectual exchange of range 3 fire from both sides) and then bump Fel (very easy to accomplish given the combo of the viper's dial + boost/barrel roll). Next turn, the best Fel can do is k-turn and if he doesn't then Guri will be in a trailing position and now the onus is on Fel to avoid getting shot down. Keep the fight close to asteroids and even Fel will struggle to escape your firing arc every time. If Fel ever gets turned around and comes at you head on again, you just bump again and repeat. The only downside is in a timed environment, a 35 pt Fel is typically cheaper than a suped up Guri...
