Aim and Double Aim with Gunnery

By Urikson, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi,

This is Uri, long time reader, first time poster. Two of my players had an argument which I couldn't adjudicate, so I turn to my learned colleagues for advice; is it possible to use the aim maneuver in spaceship combat in the same way it's used in personal combat? If yes, is it possible to take strain damage for double aim maneuver?

Thanks in advance.

EotE pg 234 "perform a combat check with vehicle weapons"

Step 1. Declare an attack and select target,

Sorry nothing about a maneuver, the para right above it goes into a little detail and refers you to pg 204, but still nothing about a maneuver. I would say that since both the PC ship and the enemy ship is moving that aiming would be impossible. Now, with that being said there is a seperate action from the one on page 234 called "fire discipline" on page 235 that gives the next player to fire a boost die if the original player is successful with "fire discipline."

So other than that, no aiming, others might say yes, but you as the GM have the power to house rule anyways.

OOC:

Joker: have you ever shot women or children?

Gunner: Yeah!

Joker: How can you shoot women and children?

Gunner: easy, you don't lead them as much!

Actually Osprey; Page 232 CRB.

Paragraph on Maneuvers, towards the end of the first long paragraph.

"...characters are assumed to be able to perform any personal maneuvers such as dropping prone, managing gear, or interacting with the environment (although the CM and players should use common sense as to what a character can and cannot do given the situation). This also includes maneuvers such as aiming, since a character can aim with a quad laser turret just as he can aim with a blaster rifle . In general, all the maneuvers listed starting on page 201 apply in all forms of combat (with a certain level of common sense)"

So to the OP.

Yes, you can Aim. And I would assume that Yes, you can take strain to take a Second Maneuver and Aim Twice.

Yep except for one thing, can't aim twice, EotE pg 201 states: "A character only gains the benefit of aiming if he remains in his current position and does not perform any additional maneuvers or actions before his next combat check."

A second aim would be a second maneuver and would negate his first aim and saying it doesn't matter is min/max.

Under Aim, Page 201.

"Gain B on the next combat check. If the character spends two consecutive maneuvers aiming, he gains BB on the next combat check"

Which would suggest you can do this in space combat, but you use your action to take a second Maneuver to gain both Boost in the second round. And wouldnt take any Strain.

You need to read the Aim rule. You can double Aim.

Hell, and I was getting mad at a guy on another thread about not reading all the way through posts and here I am not reading all the way through the paragraphs in the book LOL, apologies folks , won't happen again. I have been thoroughly schooled.

No worries Osprey, theres alot of rules and everyone trips up.

I was getting everything wrong the first few months I was GMing. :)

I only knew those off the top of my head as I had to read them a dozen times when my group and I were getting space combat all wrong... and even then, we missed the speed requirements for some ship actions!

Haven't been GM for SW yet, just playing for a while now...then on top of that I still ain't in the habit of aiming. What a NOOB move right?

Well it depends what else you want to do, sometimes Aim is not always the best option. And Double aiming, while nice, reduces your shots by 50%, and you are stat there without anything else to defend with.

Unless you spend 2 strain to get a second maneuver. Then you double aim and attack!

PEW PEW PEW!

Actually yes. Now I re-read it, its on the next combat check, not the next round.

I stand corrected! (See Osprey, we all get it wrong!)

Double Aiming could be very beneficial when firing a weapon with the Slowfire quality, such as an actual turbolaser.

Are you spending all your attention doing the best possible with that action, or are you doing other things.

(Usually I'm drawing my second weapon and ducking for cover, or I'd be aiming! )
