Finn Edwards (bootlegger) questions

By MrBody, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Sorry, search isn't working for me.

Finn's "Holdout" ability, "never has to discard items or lose money" is stumping me.

- Does he get to keep one time use items like molitovs, holy water, or eldar signs(!!!)?

- Does this mean that his bank loan is of no consequence and nothing happens when he defaults on it?

Another question regarding his loan: does that mean he gets $10 in addition to his starting $8?

Finn is never forced to discard items, but some items only work if you first choose to discard them (holy water, etc). In order to get those items to work, Finn must choose to discard them, just the same as everyone else.

When Finn defaults, the only game effect is that he cannot take out another loan for the rest of the game.

No. He has somehow managed to purchase items with the loan money before leaving the bank (yes, really).

I thought it odd his decription talks about his wealthy smuggler's lifestyle, but then he's the only investigator that has to take out a loan.

...that he has no intention of paying back. It's not a loan...it's a con.

I guess "plenty of cash" does not equate "gearing for war".

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that he starts with a Loan. If he didn't, many players would immediately think to take out a no-risk loan with him, and that he was a "broken" or "flawed" character because of that. Forcing the player to start with a loan and then docking him 2 dollars on it pre-emptively negates all these problems.

How? The $10 from the Loan basically buys Finn his second Skill (worth $10). The rest:

$6 – 2 Common Items at $3 each
$10 – 2 Unique Items at $5 each
$1 – Whiskey
$8 – Cash
-------
$25 – standard cash equivalent for Investigators

Because he starts with $8 and a bank loan that's already taken out. He doesn't receive an additional $10 at game setup because of the loan. The "docking him two dollars" just means that he starts with 8 bucks and a loan, rather than 10 bucks and a loan. I'm not considering total starting item "value"s.

Theme over gameplay sitch. Gotcha.
