Jury Rigged Question

By PrettyHaley, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

If a character used the Jury Rigged talent on an item and wants to put the talent on a new item, can he remove the effect from the first item to put it on a new one?

I know the talent says that the bonus lasts until the item is lost or destroyed. I'm not sure if that means selling or giving away the item wouldn't have the same effect. That seems silly to me but then I think that the limitation is there so people don't just jury rig their equipment du'jour every time they decide to carry something new.

Sorry if this is answered elsewhere. I tried the Dev thread but, beyond that, I have a hard time searching because, if there's an actual search function on these forums, I've never found it.

First off the search function is under your name when logged in on the dark grey/blue bar at the top of the page... its usually useless!

Now for your question, while the rules state that it is able to be transferred when a piece of equipment is lost or destroyed i would allow some GM ruling on this. in my mind if the character spent some time, a day as a guess, working on the gear then they could apply the talent to a new piece of gear, while the old piece would either revert to its base settings, or suffer minor or moderate damage to represent the un-hacking being damaging to the functionality of the old equipment.

i would never let it happen during an encounter or over a short period of time (to avoid the swapping back and forward you mentioned). i would also reiterate to the player the narrative side of the talent, this is supposed to be their signature piece of equipment, the reason it gets the boost is not just because of some little personal tweak, but because they spend a lot of time caring for and maintaining that piece of equipment.

You're quoting the talent correctly , that specifically was never answered in the dev question section . Honestly though I would think most GM's would just let you swap it to a new item . It seems to me the intent of that phrase is to limit each rank of jury rigged to a single item at a time .

Hey Haley, I'd allow it as GM, barring some sort of abusive use (swapping out multiple times in a scene to get the benefits for every piece of gear the character uses, for example). As long as you're between scenes, or making use of some downtime, and the character does something narrative to actually "jury rig" the gear, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

For searching, you should I be able to start here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=search&fromMainBar=1

But be warned, you've gotta be real specific with your wording.

I think the only way to get to the search bar on this page is to click it with the mouse. Or perhaps if you did a page search for "This forum" and then shift-tabbed to get to the search box. But that's kinda hokey.

Thanks for the answers.

And the search thingie sounds wonky enough that maybe I'm glad I can't find it!

Quickly skimming over the jury rig rules, it doesn't seem to say one way or another. . . . which means that it's left to GM discretion. If I were running the game, I'd have no problem with swapping out the add-ons. An hours in a quiet location and boom, new blaster scope (or whatever),

And yes - the search functionality is about as useful as nipples on a bull.

I've always played it as a narrative limitation. You can only benefit from one application of Jury Rigged per rank. If you want to switch it to another item, then just come up with a suitable story as to why you can't use the first one anymore (you lost it, you sold it, it broke, a Jubjub Bird swooped down and snatched it away, etc.).

I'd have no problem with a player wanting to switch which item is affected by the Jury-Rigged talent.

True, the books don't cite a definitive answer, but since a PC can apply it to a new item should their currently Jury-Rigged item be destroyed or otherwise lost, I'd say that simply picking a new item (such as that shiny new heavy blaster rifle you picked up as opposed to the blaster carbine you've been using) is perfectly within the spirit of the rules. It'd simply be a case of the character no longer spending the time to routinely care and maintain the previous Jury-Rigged item to get that extra bit of performance, thus allowing it to revert to its' default value while the new item that the character is focused on gets the bonus.

I probably would apply some kind of narrative element like you have to do it at your workstation in between story arcs and not on the fly in the field during a session probably, but otherwise it's not a biggy in my eyes. Unless a PC had a free rank of it, then I might even say ok when they get a new shiney toy during a session. I don't think it's meant to be terribly draconian in the enforcement, just one rank per item.
