What are better starter lists?

By NukeMaster, in X-Wing

I want to introduce a few more people to X-Wing. I've found it much easier to teach games by playing a small point game instead of trying to explain all the rules then play a standard game.

That being said I'm not really a fan of the X-Wing vs 2 Ties match up. I find it goes can last too long (especially if you let the new guy fly Luke with R2 which people like to do). So does anyone else have an idea for a couple of fun starter squads? Some of the things I am looking for are:

-matches that will end fairly quickly

-have a fun pilot skill or up grade

-iconic ships

What ships do you have to choose from?

If 1 X-wing v 2 TIEs goes too long for you, most games will be too long for you. The "iconic" things I could recommend would all be bigger, e.g.:

Escape from Death Star: 1 Falcon vs 4 TIEs

Trench Run: Luke & Wedge vs Vader & 2 TIEs

Death Star 2: Lando, Wedge, Tycho vs 3 INTs & 4 TIEs

etc.

When introducing new players I run away from upgrades. No skills, no ordenance. Just a pair of x wings with R2 astromech ( green 1,2 speed ) vs 4 ties. Let the new guy fly the X. 2 vs 4 is MUCH better than 1 vs 2, and you play with 2 basic sets, probably the first money you will expend in x wing

Is it you running one and only one new person? If that's the case, I still think you run the Tie Fighters and the new person gets Luke. Fly badly. Let him win. It doesn't have to be long. He'll get the hang of it. That's for first time game.

If you have 2 new players, though, then it could be different. Don't use Luke or R2. I'd go with all generics. Two Academies vs Rookie? Or make it one Obsidian and you can see the PS skill and how to barrel roll well.

My brother's adamant at flying Chewie in a 100 point build as his first game. Thoughts for his build and what Imperial list I should fly? I want to give him the edge, naturally, but I don't want it to look like it.

I've run this process a few times and it's worked pretty well:

Play two basic TIEs vs basic Luke with the new player on the X-Wing. Swap out a basic TIE for Howlrunner, give Luke PTL and swap sides. Make sure you get your movement cookie(s) down quickly and then talk through theirs.

I don't think a game has lasted much over 10 minutes.

One X-Wing and a Y-wing vs Darth Vader and two academy pilots

Stick in whichever unique X-wing pilot you want (usually luke or wedge) and an ion turret on the Y-wing. Points end up around 50, don't fuss too much over exact point totals.
