Twin Shadows question.

By Doctor X, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Is Boba Fett going to be in the Twin Shadows expansion? I see he's going to have a Villain Pack, however, since he's featured on the cover of the box, would expect him to be inside.

Asking so I don't go looking for the Villain Pack only to find that if I'd been patient, there was one in the expansion already.

No, the Boba Fett figure is not in the Twin Shadows campaign box. It contains ten figures - two new heroes, four Tusken raiders and four heavy stormtroopers. It will likely have a deployment card for him and a token like the core set did for Han and Chewie, though.

Ok, probably something to include in the product info. If I'd either bought one and then found out that if I'd just been patient I'd have gotten one in the box, or not bought one thinking I'd get one in the expansion with his picture on it and then find out I don't and should've bought it months ago, I'd feel like I'd been had in either event.

To spare us all from watching this powder keg go off again, give this a read;

The thread debated how false (or not) the advertising was, and it was eventually locked.

You'll also notice that the product info makes no mention of Boba Fett in the game, other than his depiction on the box art;

The short version is that if you're playing campaigns, then you can in fact make full use of Boba Fett, albeit as a token rather than a sweet miniature. If you're playing skirmish, then you're out of luck at tournaments, thus the sold-separately figure pack.

Just wanted to know if I'd be buying him twice or not. Looks like the discussion on whether or not a product should contain what's shown on the label was already had without me, so won't go into it.

This part of the query is a fair question.

Currently, there is no "double-dipping" on packs in terms of buying a model for a character that already has a model in the box.

Down the line, FFG is going to be releasing a new pack of Stormtroopers in alternate sculpts as a Villain Pack, which will contain both a normal and elite deployment card, as well as some new Agenda cards/rewards to integrate into your campaign game, and the ubiquitous command cards for skirmish.

The difference here is that releasing alternate sculpt Stormtroopers lets players who want the trooper horde get their extra mooks without dropping another $100 on a core set, or pay a similar cost to get them on the grey market. At least this way you get more material for your game and a different sculpt for visual diversity. Personally I'd love to see another sculpt of Trandoshans, but I think I'm in the minority on that one.

By buying the Boba Fett pack for instance, all you'll really be "stuck" with is an extra copy of Boba Fett's deployment card, as one will be in Twin Shadows and one will be in the pack. The cards will be identical and are only included in the pack to allow for a Skirmish-only player to potentially grab Boba and get the card without investing in the box as well.

Ultimately, the decision to buy the extra packs comes down to some basic wants for your gaming experience;

1)Are you planning to play Skirmish primarily?

You should probably invest in the packs, especially the ones that replace tokens in the box sets, as the tokens are not tournament-legal

2)Are you planning on playing Campaign primarily, and what is your budget situation for gaming in general, this game in particular?

This is going to come down to your own cash flow and how you want to allocate it. Don't let anyone tell you it's a "must have" for the game, as the Core and Twin Shadows alone without any of the other packs will still give you enough to work with to make the Core campaign more variable on multiple playthroughs, and you'll have the Twin Shadows option as a short-form campaign if you find it holds your group's interest better.

Now, in terms of pure enjoyment, I think that if you can budget the money aside for Twin Shadows and the extra packs, you will certainly get a more robust and variable campaign game over multiple playthroughs. Each expansion box and wave of packs will just increase the variance as time goes on, so if the game is a hit with your group, and you can afford to keep investing in the expansions, expect a "Big Box/Small Box" release cycle of new campaign material, where the big boxes will have a new campaign similar in scope to Core and the small boxes will be shorter affairs like Twin Shadows.

Each time you grab one of those boxes in particular, the amount of Side Missions and Agenda sets will continue to grow, allowing you to introduce new things into older campaigns to freshen them up again for your players.

For more of a look into that, check out the product line for Descent Second Edition.

The villian/ally packs also do add an additonal mission to the campaign, and in the case of villian packs add agenda cards for campaign as well.

If all you want is the figure though, you might want to consider just finding a mini-sculpture of the character from a different board game. I'm using Han and Chewie currently from my old Star Wars monopoly boardgame as figures to replace the cardboard tokens.
