Suspicious dice shuffling and rolling ... cheating?

By IG88E, in X-Wing

I really don't get it. Why even bother playing if you cheat? I mean... Will one feel cooler or satisfied if he wins by cheating? He could just as well declare himself a winner, pack up and give himself a reward.

I play games for fun and I really get upset when someone tries to cheat or exploit. If it's casual play I just tell them to stop. He can just roll dice like a normal person instead of doing some voodoo that raises concerns about fair play. If it's tournament I just ask them to stop as first warning, but if I see them do it again I will call the judge and tell him how I see it, asking him to look at his hands for the rest of the match if necessary.

I didn't drive up there to get worked up by some buttface who has to win so hard he has to cheat and exploit - I play it for fun, and if he ruins it by such behaviour I don't want to play anymore. We all have limited time to spend on our hobbies and I don't think I want such people to affect how I enjoy it.

It would play out something like this....

Person b: shakes dice 3 times looks then rolls, all hits

Person a: excuse me can you roll normal please

Person b: this is normal for me

Person a: excuse me mr TO can you watch this guy and let him know to stop rolling weird

TO: excuse me sir you'll need to start rolling normal, person a has some concerns

Person b: ok, shakes dice 3 times and no look this time, all hits

Person a: excuse me mr TO he's still rolling weird, he got all hits again so I know he's cheating somehow

This type of mentality would hurt the game worse in my opinion than the very very few people that might try and actually cheat. Personally ide be more concerned with how they move their ships because that seems like an easier way to cheat than by mastering dice rolling. Just my opinion tho, I just feel this gives people way too much power to be jerks about things when you can dictate how they roll their dice.

FFG should offer an official Dice Roller program to go with their upcoming TO program.

And for every player in a tournament, there should be a sanctioned Dice Roller.

The Dice Rollers would be randomly assigned to players every round, of course.

Or, and maybe this is a better idea, FFG should include a pile of scratch-off dice sheets in the tournament kits.

Each player would get one to use during the tournament.

Every time you roll dice, you scratch off the appropriate number of dice results on a new row.

Just have tablets with the dice app there and use that, include a way to check it's not been hacked and boom problem solved.

There seem to be a lot of emotions involved in this topic.

There's just not the same feeling in a program that there is in using dice. Someone would have to do something very very shady for me to complain. I know I am streaky (both good and bad) and it makes games involving dice a lot more exciting... cause you just never know. If someone has a quirk, but you can tell the dice are moving and rolling when released... no problem. Having to have a judge at each table that rolls dice for each player in an "official" app, would take away a lot of the fun of the game. The weaker player wins in a lawyer world. Cheers to the strong players!

What I have more of a problem with is people dropping a die as they're about to roll, and only picking the die up and rolling it with the rest of the dice if it's a result that the player doesn't want.

Many of these problems could be solved by forcing everyone to roll into a core set lid or other shallow box but when I suggested that this happen, it was immediately shot down by my group because it apparently would be too difficult to roll into a shallow box, as if it's difficult to see into a shallow box in a game where they spend most of the time standing. So I guess it's better to call a TO over and try to get someone kicked out. *shrugs*

Best idea all thread.

We need a new "Deluxe Core Set" that includes:

  • Acrylic Range Ruler
  • Acrylic Movement Templates
  • Acrylic Tokens
  • New Damage Deck
  • Box top with small craps-like pyramids on the sides, to be used for rolling dice

What I have more of a problem with is people dropping a die as they're about to roll, and only picking the die up and rolling it with the rest of the dice if it's a result that the player doesn't want.

I actually like the box idea, I've used before when playing risk with friends. We called it the battle box haha. But yes the box idea would work great for xwing, that way no ships get put in harms way and people wouldn't be giving the raises eyebrow when you get all hits or all evades and the best part is you can roll the dice, place the dice, look at the dice, feel the dice, speak to the dice anyway you want without people thinking your cheating.

And how safe is the dice app? (Despite the fact that I hate dice apps and would never use them for myself)

There are stories about it being hacked but you could always force players to play with a fresh install from the market place.

No way am I playing someone using a dice app. Ridiculous.

How you folks feel about the FFG translucent dice, since most of them have visible air bubbles?

The weight distribution is slightly off but is it enough to warrant them not legal for tourney play?

No normal die that you buy is 100% weighted. Some bubbles don't really matter.

About the suspicious shaking:

The thing is if he refuces to change it he at least expects something from doing it. Hard to say if/when its cheating but its also not looking like fair play and generating a good atmosphere.

May I direct you to my thread here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/175327-inside-look-of-the-2014-and-2015-promo-dice/?hl=inside

I have actual CT scans of both editions of the Regional Dice (the 2014 translucent and the 2015 "marbled") and the normal ones from the Core Set.

All of them have air bubbles, there's no extreme variation, except maybe there's actually more air in the Core/normal ones.

Direct link to videos of the CT slices are here:

You object to dice free of air bubbles i take it?

*ice cream has no bones*

If you're playing in a tournament, enjoy your forfeit because your opponent does not require your permission to use the FFG App.

The x com game has an app and it works fine.

I'd be more open to the idea if they RELEASED AN APP FOR WINDOWS PHONES!

Maybe it all comes down to how well you treat your dice is how well they treat you. A Karma thing.

I mean do you keep your dice in a dark and cold box all week until they are needed?

Do you tell them how much you love and appreciate their hard work?

Do you keep track of individual performance and reward the ones who do well?

Do you make examples of the ones who fail on a regular basis?

What if this is the whole secret to the dice issue? Maybe the guy who shakes his dice and then looks into his hand is apologizing to his dice and asking for their support.

How many of us has truly taken the time to get to know our dice, do they have a dice wife or dice children?

Karma is a horrific system, if a child gets knifed to death karma says the child did something to deserve it.

How do you know he didn't deserve it?!?!?!

That would be cheating remember? ;)

hahaha I think it means the person that knifed the baby will have something bad happen to him no?

No karma clearly says the child/baby has done something to deserve that violent death.

Too often it's presented as some hippy dippy love everyone and good things will happen to you system but thats just not true.

If you believe in karma you believe the victims of child abuse deserve it, you believe the jews deserved to be wiped out in germany, you believe that a woman gang raped to death in India had it coming to her.

If you did something horrible in another life when another person entirely do you deserve to suffer if you've done nothing but good in this life? karma says yes you do.

That's not how karma works, dude.

Getting killed by Nazis isn't a karmic reaction to anything, even in karma.

Edit: And if you believe in reincarnation (as most religions who believe in karma do) it's fine because you'll get a better outcome next time.
