How do you feel about Aces and Factory repaints?

By allistorpreist, in X-Wing

Again i think i'd rather see repaints and new pilots for iconic ships than scratch around for the 'mcdeathtron urgalurga fighter bomber' that was in 'star wars grilled cheese dreams comic issue 567 for two pages flown by an unamed bounty hunter in boba fetts nightmare.

Dude, I totally missed that issue. Who was the pilot? I need to proxy him in my next game.

I am sad they have not released more. I don't want to buy duplicates of the same product. I have a few from gifts but my a wing swarm will have to wait. They should be releasing the models they already have with new upgrade cards and pilots before new ones now. I'm not saying never release new ones, but slow down and make more aces (or even epic ships with small sized ship add ons...transport sized not raider/corvette sized).

I know some peeps buy as many of a ship that can be fielded at once, that's fine, but ffg shouldn't listen to their big pockets,,.../oh guess my dreams won't come true.

Bomber and defenders for imperials - Xwing and e-wing for rebels - scum...... I don't think there ready yet but go a head and give the imperials a boat pack!!! That has a assault gunboat and missile boat until then :P

The fact that the Royal Guard TIE doesn't have winglets, will never truly sit quite right with me. Past that, I don't mind them.

I feel repaints (from FFG at least) should be accents to the game. To many repaints from FFG and the custom models lose their look in asthetic value. (You spent time painting this? Why when you can buy it?(type attitude)).

However no offical FFG models with repaints kind of leaves the game board a little lackluster for purists, and besides, all 3 reapint kits (not counting the X-wing repaint, but the Scum Pack instead) Have all come with cards essential to make said fighters more viable in the game. (Auto thrusters imp aces, Chardaan refit Reb aces, BTL-Y4 S&V, to name a few cards).

I love the reapints FFG has put out, and I love what the community has done with their own models as well. I plan on painting my B-wings after the Dagger squadron because I got the Rebel Aces pack. A guy at my FLGS painted his entire TIE series with red stripes because he got the IMP aces. It almost seems these kits sometimes encourage people to go out and paint their own fleets.

I can paint my own, in some cases I do. But I am both busy and lazy efficient, so official repaints suit me fine.

I like them. But I always underbuy ships. So when a new set comes out it's an opportunity to complete things.

Like I got my fourth X-wing from the GR so in theory I can run 4.

And I got my 3rd and 4th Z-s from scum.

I dont want to scape the bottom of the EU barrel anymore (except for the gunboat) I'd prefer more Mainstream ships with aces packs.

I would have vastly preferred a tie bomber aces pack and a y wing aces pack to the wave 7 abominations coming.

Having said that, i am not interested in buying an alternate ship only for the paint scheme, it needs to have some good cards and pilots as well. I don't need more tie bombers, i need better ordnance. I would happily buy a pack that supplied that along with the cool repainted bomber.

I'd like to see more epic as well.

Here is a thought: more isn't always better. aside from a few minor fixes, do we need more ships? perhaps a well balanced game is more imprtant than power creep and obscure ships simply for the sake of "we need to relase something"

A game can be complete and still be a thriving game. I'm sure they will continue to sell a lot of all the current waves.

I'm sure there will be those who disagree, but I don't want to be at a place in the game where my b-wings are obsolete and never played anymore, or my bombers are phased out by punishers, or my xwings are no longer viable (oh wait.......crap!)

I'd rather have a quality game than just more plastic

This is exactly what happened with SWM. they did not know when to quit, and I think they had about 8 different versions of Han solo by the time they were done. their mini quality slipped a lot as well.

Yeah, let's ignore WOTC and how they were pretty much trying to get out of the Star Wars games at that time.

As for "scraping the bottom of the barrel of the EU", that is 100% opinion. There are ships that have not been made that people want. Why is your opinion better than theirs. I have models of ships that I have never had models of before, and I love it. And so far, I have seen that the current designers are very good about keeping ships from obsoleting other ships. The B-wing was a bit of a mistake, for the generic X-wing, sure. But the B-wing had no effect on the unique X-wing pilots. And really, that is hardly that bad of a misstep.

FFG is a fan of "living games", that are never truly complete. And X-wing is such a big money maker, they are not going to stop it until it is dead. And, FFG has been good with supporting the older movie ships. Let's wait to see what the mid wave release is after Wave 7.

Personally, I hope that FFG doesn't put out any more aces packs, except for maybe one for Scum & Villainy. It was a neat idea, but I think that it has run its course. The last thing we need are N different repaints of each ship.

Sorry, I NEED a green X-wing, black X-wing, a green A-wing, all the TIEs in grey and blue varients, and whatever repaints that they want throw at us.

Couldn't disagree more with the above, while yes different ships are always good no matter what, and scum & villainy do need their own ace pack, I think that some focus should remain with the core star-fighters, and I believe that ace packs are the best way to maintain this.

Being a member of MEcantina's Grey squadron for... what.. 17 years now? Grey A-wings would be the bomb.

I DEFINITELY want more repaints. FFGs quality is very high out-of-box and it saves me having to do the work.

source? I think they lost the license from cranking out worse and worse stuff.

The issue with this is as noted above. you begin to run out of ships and design space for those ships, and wind up with more and more obscure stuff that a lot of people have no interest in. Do you really want every tie variant? I don't How about all of the uglies? Not me. I want this game to continue to do well, and one of the ways that can occur is by not selling stuff that induces power creep, obsoletes older ships, and that is just plain not that desirable. now, I realize that that is subjective, but i am certainly not the only one who has no interst in this next wave. (except for the upgrades, that is.) If WOTC was trying to get out of the business, they could have fooled me. how many different expansion packs did they crank out there near the end? they were poorly thought out, and overpowered compared to earlier sets.

If you commit to the notion that the game is never really complete, then you have 2 options. 1.) keep releasing more and more powerful ships 2.) keep releasing more and more ships with almost the same stats as existing ships but which are increasingly more obscure. The new scum xwing comes to mind. It's stats are almost the same as an xwing, and that's ok for scum, because they could not acess the xwing, but what do you do after a while when every specification has been filled and you have 3 or 4 ships that are basically the same ship with only minor differences?

I think that when you go down either of these roads very far you start to kill the game, and I don't want to see that happen, and on that, I think we can all agree.

I subscribe to the niche theory. A ship doesn't have to be top tier, as long as it has a good niche, even if it isn't something commonly used.

We still have a good couple years of waves, left, imo. There is definintely plenty of ships left that I want to see that will last a few years. So, I don't necessarily see the concern. And the current designers have proven to be very creative. I trust them to make the obscure ships interesting.

People have been declaring that they've been "done" with the game since Wave 4. You will pardon me if I dismiss such complaints about obscurity, since the game is still THRIVING.

This.

In an ideal word the game should have focus on the key ships each side uses

XAYB for Rebels

Fighter Interceptor Bomber. For the imperials.

No idea about scum.

The other ships should be ace/specialist

Now it's cool, REALLY cool to fly Advanced squadrons, defender couples, and that's fine. But I feel ace packs for the basic ships should really make things more interesting.

TIE Fighters need this perhaps least of all. A and B are essentially fixed and brilliant - not that B was ever broken (apart from arguably being too good for the points) Still, the pilots give it variety.

Bombers, on the fence pending wave 7, need more pilots, pilot EPT slots, elite pilots?

Interceptors: Fixed and fixed again.

Y-wings. Probably fixed. I think Rebel Y-wings need more love.

X-wings. Let's mass debate lyrical about this some more eh? A rogue squadron theme pack with a title upgrade boosting it's efficiency would probably fix this, but let us not derail the thread when there is a perfectly good hundred elsewhere.

Something I've given a fair bit of thought to: Large ships.

The Lambda, for instance, is a great ship, with lots of good options. But I'd love if it had another title or two. And some new pilots. The YT-1300 doesn't need help _at all_, but giving it a couple more pilots with some interesting abilities wouldn't suck. And maybe there's another title floating around that could be interesting?

The downside here is that you can't really put out another Falcon box. Or another Lambda, etc.

Maybe the way to do it would be a Rebel Most Wanted style box- it could have an X-Wing and an E-Wing in the box, a couple fixes for them, and a bunch of new options for Large ships not in the box. Or a similar concept for Imperials with the Defender and the Bomber.

Maybe they can when ep VII comes out. There is a new imp shuttle and the Falcon has a new dish. :)

I'm a fan of the Aces sets and I think it's a good way to fix ships that are underperforming (like Chardaan Refit did for the A-Wing). I much prefer that than having to buy an epic ship like the Raider or Transport to fix a ship (especially when the transport did noting to address the X-wing's real problerms!).

I also think this is a good way to keep older ships fresh and relevant without scraping the bottom of the EU barrel (the new K-wing is unspeakably hideous!).

I'd like to see a Rebel Aces 2 set that had some fixes to make the X-wing and E-wing more useful than they currently are (I'd also like to see some Z-95 aces that were worth taking... I'm so jealous of the unique TIE fighter pilots!). The TIE Defender and Bomber are probably the the most in need of an aces pack for the Empire.

As I'm not particularly skilled at painting, let alone at this small scale, I like the repaints and since I like the classic movie ships the most, I like aces in that they repack these ships with new cards and ways of playing.

Have I ever mentioned before I *really* wish for a Corsec Green X-wing? ;)

Yes to repaints and aces packs!

I am withholding on new purchases for just that reason, I wait for more repaints :P

I really liked both aces packs.

I'm less fond of the imperial repaints like the upcoming tie advanced that just change grey/white to grey/blue. The ships end up feeling mismatched as opposed to unique.

I'd still prefer just about any kind of repaint (with new pilots of course) to most of the EU.
