How do you feel about Aces and Factory repaints?

By allistorpreist, in X-Wing

I say factory repaints to be clear, we all love people's custom repaints. But how do you feel about the repaints from Fantasy Flight? The Imperial Aces, Rebel aces, GR90 X wing repaint, and even the Scum to a lesser extent.

Sure, the new cards are always nice, but to you feel the repainted models give you more?

I am personally split on this. In most mini games, I hate buying two of the same model. Obviously this is tricky in Xwing, but I love having 3 paitjobs for my Tie Interceptors. I love flying B Wings that don't look the same. In Theory I would do custom paint jobs, but I have a pile of non-X Wing models that need my painting love. To be honest, there was a small part of me that was sad that there was no factory Scum repaint of the Firespray. even the little pallet swap on the X-Wing in the GR box means I only have 2 that match.

But the flip side of that (IMHO) is timing. I came to the game a little late, so when I bought my interceptor, A-Wing and B-wing, I kinda knew aces were coming. When I bought the GR, I already had 3 x-wings so while I like the repaints, I have some great sympathy for the people who already had their recommended daily allowance of A's, B's and interceptors when those kits came out. I am trying to imagine how upset the Imperial players who have been here from the beginning would feel if a TIE/ln repaint hit with cards they really needed.

But overall, I love repaints more than I dislike having too many of some ships. And besides, with the impending raider, I may need the extra Xs. But how do you feel? Do you want more Aces repaints?

Short Answer:

Sure I kinda of like the different paint schemes.

Long Answer:

I too have mixed feelings. I had 4 x TIE Interceptors and 4 X A-Wings when the Aces pack came out. Now guess how many I have sitting on the shelf not even part of my kit or part of a kids toy chest somewhere. Conversely is this better or worse than purchasing the TIE Punisher, Raider and GR-75? The Raider will come with enough cards to use with other TIE Advanced unless you have more than three already. But will the TIE Punisher come with enough cards for my existing 4 x TIE Bombers?

Over all I don't mind the Aces idea, and even like getting different paint schemes even if it means that I end up tossing some models (Yep they'll end up busted and in the trash). My concern is two fold A) constantly buying new ships to fix old ships stuff B) not getting enough cards with the new ships you're encouraged to buy.

I came recently to this game, and one of the reasons I picked this new hobby is because the models looked great. I have zero artistic talent and would only leave a model looking like I spilled strawberry jelly on it if I tried to custom paint it myself.

I say bring on the Aces packs. I'd prefer Aces to digging too deep into EU material and coming up with bizarre and ugly ships. Also, the Aces pack give FFG the ability to fine tune the balance. Yes, it'd be great to have every ship perfectly balanced from Day One, but that's not reasonable in my opinion. I do not get the feeling they purposefully botch a design in order to force us to buy fixes. I see their approach as always trying to bring in new components cautiously and incrementally to lead to list diversity.

I play casually, and will not let a limited number of upgrade cards stop me. Proxy, or use squad builder printouts. If you're in the competitive scene, this doesn't work. Because of this, I do think FFG should always include at least 4 'fix' cards... And they shouldn't really be packaged with a relatively expensive Epic ship. I don't blame FFG for making money, but having the Advanced fix in a $70 package is like a video game requiring you to buy a bug patch.

For grunts, I love having uniform paint jobs, particularly in swarms.

For aces, the more options the better so that they can be distinguished.

I love 'em.

I have 3 copies of imperial aces, just so i can choose which flight i want to field of interceptors (as well as 3 interceptors).

I love the repaints as well as new cards/titles.

Real talk: I can't tell the difference between the 2 different paint jobs on the X-Wing.

But I do _love_ the paint jobs on the Most Wanted packs.

I wouldn't have bought Imperial Aces if all it offered was a different paint scheme, but since I got some awesome cards with it, I got 3 boxes.

To me, the cards that come with the various packs are the important part, assuming that the ship is one I want to fly. I'm getting a Raider because I really want to put it on the table. The fact that it comes with 4 awesome fixes for the Tie Advanced is pure gravey.

Seriously. Can't tell you how excited I am for the Raider. Gods that thing looks good. And epic games are the best games.

Im more than capable of doing my own repaints but i love the fact with xwing i dont need to.

So far the 'aces' repaints means i can have 'elite' flights of four blue a wings, or three red tie ints with a lot less hassle.

Cool cards is a bonus.

Originally i really hated the red tie ints, now they are my faveourite.

Again i think i'd rather see repaints and new pilots for iconic ships than scratch around for the 'mcdeathtron urgalurga fighter bomber' that was in 'star wars grilled cheese dreams comic issue 567 for two pages flown by an unamed bounty hunter in boba fetts nightmare.

Note im reducing to the ridiculous there but you know what i mean.

Too late! ;)

IF FFG wanted to release "themed" repaint sets like Rogue Squadron, Wraith Squadron, etc... I'd buy them in a heartbeat.

I agree so hard with this. If they stop putting out new ships now and just do aces packs with some creative new pilots and cards, I'd be happy. They could've done that instead of wave 7, and I'd be fine, though Scum is still kinda playing catch-up in terms of ships.

Just curious, how often do you actually use components from all 3 boxes in a game? Especially since the Imperial Aces doesn't include the Alpha or Avenger Pilots, I find it hard to fathom why you would need 3 boxes.

I love the idea. Long ago I said I would only buy one of each expansion. As it turns out, there are lots of ships that you need multiples of, but I hate the idea of having extra cards and tokens duplicated. Sure I could buy stuff on the secondary market, but I find that a hassle. The aces packs let me pas out my forces without purchasing doubles.

3 181st paint jobs?

As much as I love the Wedge repaint of one of my core set X-Wings (and use it every time I fly Wedge, which is most of the time), I like having the factory repaint from the transport as well. Not only is the quality overall better over the core set, but the new markings are sharper than anything I've been able to do. Plus, it lets me field 3 X-Wings without needing ID tokens.

I wish they'd do a repaint of the TIE fighter - the ones I have are pretty sloppy and those were the best ones I could find - even if it's just to make them the same color as the bomber/Interceptor.

I wonder if FFG went with the bargain painting option for the core set to keep the cost down, and went high-quality for the expansions - the differences between core and expansion X-Wings and TIEs is pretty noticeable. This just in: Premium Quality Repaint Expansions for your favorite XWM ships - same contents, better paint, $19.99.

I think the core set (and expansion TIEs) are that greyer shade as the core set sort of sums up the 'yavin' battle.

TIEs were more grey/white then as bluescreen want so hot when ANH was filmed and blue ties got 'lost'.

I have seen some early core game TIEs that are *really* white. I'd like to get my hands on some of those but they are hard to find in the .

Since I don't paint, I love them.

I don't paint, so getting aces repaints is kinda fun for me. To be honest, I would like to see more.

The Aces packs are really about the pilots and the upgrades for me, though. The extra X/A/B/Int pilots and upgrades made those packs, not the repainted ships. Like you, I bought in knowing those were coming, and Tie Ints were hard to get, so to acquire my 6 I was expecting to buy two Int and two Ace packs.

Also, unloading extra ships shouldn't be that hard with those types of ships. Go to you next tourney with your extra ships and say "$10 per small base and $20 per large base" and you'll easily get rid of them all. Everyone is always looking for new ships, and if you can get people watching, you may find they'll go grab a core from the store, and then buy 2 or 3 of your extras and join in.

Or at least that's the hope :)

Once, in an epic game.

Also: I buy my Imperial ships in groups of 3. And when I had 7 Squints (3 regular + 2 boxes of epic), it kind of drove me nuts for a couple weeks.

And now part of me wants 3 more, so I can have a full flight of 12. #facepalm

You realise that you can't fit 12 Interceptors and a Raider into 300 points right?

500 points here we come!

I would be 100% down for repaints if we could get more of a heads up on them. This is kind of my thing with the ace packs too.

I bought two tie interceptors because i love the look of them and i love trying to blow them up when i play against my wife. Then here comes the amazing looking Imperial Ace intereceptors. I bought one of those mostly for the models (fortunately it had awesome pilots and cards) but i sure don't need 4 interceptors.

Reading the forums clued me in that there might be some combination of a bwing/awing/ywing aces pack coming so i held off buying multiples of those and made due with one expansion each. Bought 2 rebel aces sets because they also look awesome.

Still holding off on picking up more ywings because i feel like an aces pack or pack in has to be coming for that even though they just put out the scum one (with two awesome z's to boot).

Splitting the batches between two schemes wouldn't work because you'd either get peg warmers or someone unhappy that they had to buy one that didn't match or they didn't like just to get all the ships they needed and i definitely don't think its a good idea to pre-announce ace packs or something because that would just encourage people not to buy the ships immediately.

I don't know what they could really do about all that. Alternate the paint scheme during reprints maybe? Something to make it easier to introduce the variants and facilitate simple trading (if i have last year's scheme someone might want to swap a new one with me or something) of just the model and not worrying about all the cards and tokens.

I'm a bit of transformers toy fan so I got no problems with repaints. :)

I like them! Especially the red TIE from Imperial Aces.

I love all my aces and expansion packs, though some of my individual ship quantities are getting silly. I had three tie int and then got two aces packs. Now I almost exclusively fly the red ones. My alt paint b-wing has been reserved for Keyan, no others are allowed to fly it.

Basically yes to expansions, FFG has been very good about releasing stuff I am happy to buy.

I am looking forward to the Ace Pack that would include the Tie Bombers that would include new Pilots! And upgrades use only by the Bombers!

I have a dream, to bad FFG is not listening!

Wings of War/Glory had 3-4 different paintjobs per plane, randomised in the boosters.

I /really/ wish X-wing did that. Cards would still be the same, of course.
