You can now get X-wing, Tie Fighter, XvT, and XWA on Steam, and it looks like they made multiplayer compatible.
X-wing Series Released to Steam!
Are the graphics upgraded?
I don't know, but it is on sale until Revenge of the 5th.
Nice! I wish I hadn't bought XWA through GOG then.

Yep, I'm in that boat too.
The Star Wars Starfighter game featuring the Naboo N-1 is only $1.79. Yeah, it's not a real sim, but man that's ridiculous. Had to pull the trigger on that one.
Edited by NightshrikeI believe the graphics are updated from the original but its not 'modern' by any means.
will it actually run on modern PCs???
If it didn't they'd be fools to release it.

If you really want to run it through Steam then use the Add Game To Library function. It's got none of the additional support that makes Steam worthwhile though.

Oh. I was hoping for multiplayer functionality.
I had a bad experience with Steam. Made me rage, uninstall it and never touch a game that required it.
As much as I love those games .. I just can't face the possible frustrations Steam may bring back. I know people love it and it seems like a great system but our relationship got off to a very rocky start and frankly, there are other more delicious fish in the sea.
....and bought.
Now I need to find a reasonably-priced flight stick on eBay... :S

Really? I love Steam. It makes it really easy to get my games.

Thank you for this. Been hoping XvsT would come out again. Been itching something fierce for this game. And my disks have been Mia for a few years.
I have to say I love Steam. I have all the 'new' (i.e. marginally updated) x wing/tie fighter series games on steam. They work really well but I do have a couple of issues - the game has not been updated to support a modern controller (such as the xbox 360 controller I have) and there are a couple of weird bugs in there like two mouse cursors showing up every now and again. There are community fixes for both though if you search google.
FYI all these games are on special sale on steam at the moment (until May 7th I think):

Yeah, as I said. I know lots of people love it and use it. It just drove me crazy once upon a time. I swore off it and to save myself the potential drama .. I'll continue to stay away from it.
It's a shame because those games are awesome!!! I loved how X-Wing came with its own mission creation tool.
I purchased a hard copy of XW Alliance, DL'd some mods to enhance graphics and grabbed a joystick. It is brilliant!
USB flight stick on it's way, ooh yeah.
Anyone know if the Steam version needs to be patched at all, or does it update automatically?

Updates automatically, but you need a screen that can run 600x by 400x (or thereabouts) resolution, or else you get an error.
Nice! I wish I hadn't bought XWA through GOG then.
Why...? O.o GoG's version is DRM-free, comes with most of the bonus material, is more compatible with mods (mods which yes, in the case of XWA do make the game look better), and even incorperates a few mods from the get-go.

All wonderful points, but I was kind of hoping to get different multiplayer functionality. Seems like that might not be there with Steam either.
...well... it works...
...I get a Device Resources error message every time I launch a mission. "Resolve BackBuffer - the parameter is incorrect". whatever that means. Sometimes I can just close the error message and the game will play as normal, most of the time it doesn't.
Oh, and the in game music occassionally stops (or works, locks into a loop).
But apart from that, it's X-Wing Alliance! Amazing!
Edited by FTS GeckoOK, so here's some news: those lovely folks at XWA Update have released a patch which is now compatible with theSteam version of X-Wing Alliance.
So (despite being warned it wouldn't be compatible with my operating system), I downloaded the patch and installed it.
And now the game runs perfectly. At maximum resolution, with all the updated skins and new high-res starfields...
...and it looks freakin' gorgeous .
Bumping again because just looking through the tech library, the work the XWAU guys have done on redesigning the X-Wing models is absolutely amazing.
The redesigned Authority IRD looks simply gorgeous. As does the Ferryboat Liner - two ships I really didn't care for at all in the original game
Edited by FTS GeckoI enjoyed Xwing on my old 486 computer. It took about a dozen 3.5" disks to carry it around and one complete summer of play everyday to finish the game. The graphics where good, the sound was great on a SoundBlaster 16 card, and many of the missions where tough. But not impossible.
