Death Star Trench

By Fanbus, in X-Wing

Congratulations on an amazing table.

I'm very tempted borrow your idea and make one for our gaming group. How did you decide on the dimensions for the trench and what are they if you don't mind me asking?

Again, top work on the board!!

The board is 3'8" x 4'. For my first board I chose a non-standard size because I didn't want to have to blend the edges to make it a full 6'. 1'10" (8" trench) per half gave me plenty of room to maneuver into the trench as well as have enough Styrofoam underneath to support the thing. I also chose 4' in length so it would more easily fit in my truck or car to travel. A full 6' in length would've limited my storage and transportation options. The current size allows it to balance pretty well at a location with 4'x 4' card tables (such as some of the gaming stores out here).

If you're going to go for something more permanent, I'd probably do a full 4' x 6' (2' per half). That gives you the option of 3' x 3' games or 2 3' x 3' or a single mega 6' game.

The one problem is that Styrofoam comes in sheets of 2' x 4' so you'll have to buy extra sheets and then join them to make the full 6'.

Lowest point at the trench is 1.5" and at the highest 4.5". I used 1.5" thick insulation Styrofoam sheets.

Sorry for the necro but I found this thread while searching for something else and just had to throw my kudos and respect your way. This is really incredible and I would also be tempted to buy one if they were for sale...

When my 23 year old was 10-13 we built dioramas for playing RPG's but nothing like this - already emailed her these pics ;)

Thankfully, I have a 20 month old and a two week old, so there are many fun times are still ahead...

What were te rules for getting into and out of the trench? Also do you now have rules for the turrets?

Tell me you've since played with the turrets (then show pictures)

Any chance this could be something that might be reproduced and available for purchase? I believe I know several people who would be interested in it who are not crafty enough to make one of their own.

If they're willing to negotiate the price do to the labor involved, that's definitely doable. I'm also open to more X-Wing standardized sizes such as 3x3, 3x5 or 3x6. The one issue would be shipping. In terms of casting it (high density poured foam), do to the size, it may be cost prohibitive for me right now. I don't know what the demand for a table like this is, and odds are it's low. But I agree, it'd be cool if a more established company with all the right equipment were to make a wood or fiberglass master and then make high density foam castings of it (like the real death star tiles).

Or you might consider reproducing the surface details and having the purchaser pickup their own foan. Cuts down on production and shipping costs.
