Is Soontir hanging with the wrong crowd?

By Haedrin, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I recently flew the following list and had a blast. I'm looking for feedback on how i could improve the list while keeping the same "feel".

Soontir Fel (27)

Push the Limit (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Shadow Squadron Phantom (27)

Fire Control System (2)

Stygium P.A. (2)

3x Academy Pilot.

It seems to me that the spot currently filled by the Shadow Sq. is the most likely to be improved but I'm unsure where to go with it.

I've never really seen the point of Shadow Squadron pilots - PS5 seems high but not high enough.

Although the question is what else you buy with the points instead.

Hrrm, I guess dropping to sigma would free up a couple of points for a crew upgrade.

Yeah, I think trading out for a Sigma would be best. As for spending the extra points, if you've got Imperial Aces, putting a second mod on Soontir is another option. Stealth Device, Hull Upgrade, and Targeting Computer would all be good choices. Otherwise, Tactician or Rebel Captive on the Phantom would give you some control.

Sigma + IA > Shadow

imo

Plus, Ties love knowing exactly how to barrel-roll to ruin your day

I do know someone who flew a very similar list for a while, I think Recon Spec and Hull on the Sigma. He seemed to do fine with it, but has since then moved on to other lists.

I like yours.

If I might make a suggestion.

If you drop one AP, you gain enough points to make a huge impact on your squad.

Instead of Shadow Squadron, pick Echo. Give him Enhanced Scopes, Veteran Instincts, ACD, and Intelligence Agent. This allows him to move first, almost certainly shoot first, recloak right after attacking, and gain intel on close fighters so that you can plan your curved decloak accordingly (since they are both at the start of activation, you can choose which goes first). You gain 2 extra evade dice and the possibility of getting an evade token

As stated, if you have Imperial Aces, you can give Fel the Royal Guard Tie and Push the Limit, Stealth Device, and Autothrusters.

That same Imperial Aces Expansion will let you spend your last 4 points to give a targeting computer to your remaining 2 APs so they can use target locks while your opponents focus on chasing down Fel and your slippery glass cannon.

In summary:

Soontir Fel + Autothrusters + Royal Guard TIE + PTL +SD (35)

Echo + VI + ACD + IA + ES (37)

2 X Academy Pilot + TC (28)

=100 points.

Assuming I get some eBay orders in tomorrow, I think I'll try this Fri night.

[...]and gain intel on close fighters so that you can plan your curved decloak accordingly (since they are both at the start of activation, you can choose which goes first).

You can't choose, actually. Decloaks happen after all other "start of Activation phase" effects for both players have resolved. So the decloak will always happen after Intel Agent triggers.

Good to know for future reference.
