The Binayre Pirates

By Squark, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So, I've got a League coming up, and this is what I was thinking of running.

Kath Scarlet (Scum) (38)
Predator (3)
Recon Specialist (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Syndicate Thug (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Unhinged Astromech (1)
BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

Binayre Pirate (12)
Feedback Array (2)

(If you're wondering why It's called the Pinayre Pirates if there's only two of them, check the flavor text on the card :P )

However, this league also includes a 33 Point "Sideboard"... Which I'm not 100% sure about the workings thereof.

As far as Scum Ships go, I've got another Y-wing and a Starviper, and I've got 2 Agressors on Order that I'll pick up just before the league begins (I considered Double IG-88, but felt I didn't have enough copies of the upgrades I really wanted to run on them- Specifically Predator and Advanced Sensors)

The Syndicate Thug isn't necessarily a Binarye, though. I might suggest downgrading him to a third zapper and spreading a few more upgrades around.

Bug Zappers with a Firespray supporting is nice, and you can never go far wrong with a Recon Specialist on a Firespray.

Hmm... While I don't have the cards or ships for that...

3x Bugzappers is 42 points. Add Kath to that and I have 10 points leftover...

Hmm... Apart from a Proximity Mine and Innertial Dampers on Kath, I don't know what else I'd give her, and adding upgrades to suicidal ships like the Bugzappers seems a poor plan.

Regarding the name: The name came after I noticed I'd put Kath alongside two of her Flunkies- I'm not terribly committed to the theme.

I've flown this Squad couple of days ago and really liked it.

Kath and the Binayre Boys:

FIRESPRAY-31: ยท Kath Scarlet (38)

Push The Limit (3)

Proton Rockets (3)

Stealth Device (3)

K4 Security Droid (3)

Z-95 HEADHUNTER: Binayre Pirate (12)

Z-95 HEADHUNTER: Binayre Pirate (12)

Z-95 HEADHUNTER: Binayre Pirate (12)

Z-95 HEADHUNTER: Binayre Pirate (12)

I don't see the point of proton rockets on Firesprays- They get four dice at range 1 anyway, after all. And Fel is the only pilot I trust not to lose his stealth device in the first engagement. I do like the idea of giving Kath a proper mini-swarm as backup, though. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get ahold of any more Z-95s, and I don't want to pick up another most wanted.

Squark, what do you think would be a better option to boost the agility of a firespray? I just think that with 2 green dice Kath is too vulnerable.

Depends. Kath ends up around 50 points by the time you're done with her. How does you feel she compares to Super Dash? What about Fat Han? Rear Admiral Chiranaeu?

My choice to improve Kath's survivability would be Recon specialist or Lone wolf (The latter being a bad idea in swarms, of course), but that takes up your Crew or Elite Pilot slot. I think we're going for different things in our list, though- You're using Kath as a closer, and trying to keep her alive as long as possible. My list is more aggressive, with Kath relying on the extra focus token from recon specialist or Boost from Engine Upgrade to keep her alive long enough to cripple the enemy.

The other list I've considered is what I've called, "Ladies' Night Out"

Kath Scarlet (Scum) (38)

Predator (3)

Recon Specialist (3)

Inertial Dampeners (1)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Guri (30)

Lone Wolf (2) (I'd prefer Predator since I don't like Lone Wolf in builds with more than 2 ships, but I don't plan on picking up a second defender so I have to tough it out with one copy until the Kirrahx hits)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Inertial Dampeners (1)

Autothrusters (2)

Virago (1)

Binayre Pirate (12)

I feel like both lists have potential, but I'm more comfortable with the Warthog and Bugzappers than a Starviper- Guri would be a bit too tricky to fly for me at present.

Recon and EU seem to clash pretty heavily

Why not try PTL and K4, instead?

also I do not recommend any build with a lone headhunter. While great in groups, a single little sh*tty Z-95 has done nothing for me but stick out like a sore thumb and get in the way of the far superior ships that go along with it.

If you have another Most Wanted (or need an excuse to get one) 4 Z-95s are a very potent escort.

Does the Firespray really have enough green to make PtL work? That's why I've been wary of it here, to be honest.

PtL+K4 is a potent combo if your opponent is flying right into your arcs but not blocking. Too vulnerable for my tastes. I like keep them mobile.

Predator+Gunner on Kath was my favorite, but gunner might be less useful these days without so many high agi ships around. Good against IGs and Soontir, but it's kind of a waste against many other popular ships. Tactician is always amazing on firesprays though.

you do with engine ;) (if you need to use it)

Boost action (which you'll get from EU) does not count as manouver. So no additional greens...

No, but a 1-Bank executed twice is effectively a 4-turn, 2-staight+Boost is a 5-forward, and a 1-forward+1-bank boost is sort of a 4-bank (albeit shallower), so you do have more maneuvering options.

Hmm... Given that the sideboard is a fixed entity selected at the beginning of the league, which we can use to modify our list before a game (and everyone's list and sideboard is public knowledge)... I think I have my list.

Kath Scarlet (Scum) (38)
Push the Limit (3)
K4 Security Droid (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Syndicate Thug (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Unhinged Astromech (1)
BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

With the sideboard consisting of

-Predator (3)

-Gunner (5)

-Autoblaster Turret (2) <- (To make room for Gunner in the main list)

-Inertial Dampeners (1)

-Torkil Mux (19)

-Intelligence Agent (1)

-Lone Wolf (2)

This way I can use Predator+Gunner against high agility threats like Bro-bots or Interceptors, or use K4+PTL against ships I think will struggle to block Kath, while I can swap the Warthog out for Mux if high PS ships are a concern.

someone hasn't played against boosting large ships enough :P

true, it's not a maneuver. But what it trades in limitations it gains in "holy **** that thing goes fast!"

While spamming engine every turn (which you shouldn't be, t.b.f) isn't necessarily as attractive as being able to pull off the TL + Focus + Evade combo, you're still getting TL + focus/evade/boost +/- another one at your discretion.

Yeah you're right, I didn't :D I'm quite new to the game anyway, playing it for a couple of month now. I'll give the boost option in combination with Ptl a try. Sounds interesting the way you describe it...

Not to mention a boost on a large base ship is pretty cool. I like your final list Squark, it's almost identical to the scum list I like to run. One thing I was toying with is deadman switch on the pirates rather than feedback array. Wondering why you chose the array over the switch?

So, I now know what at least one of the lists I'm going to be playing against is. At this point, the list and it's sideboard are locked in, but how would you modify the list for Fat Han+Corran?

Edited by Squark

cross your fingers and hope you don't roll poorly

that's basically the only way not to lose to turrets

list is otherwise fine as is, no need to dip into side-board

Super Kath's 2 agility + focus + evade should prove equal match for c3po + evade and more than a match if she gets her back-arc bonus, so nuke corran asap (because he will do a number on kath)

Game 1 result: A tie (Mutual destruction via simultaneous fire rule)

It was Ten Numb+VI+Mangler Cannon+Advanced Sensors, Biggs Darklighter, and 3 Bandits (He replaced VI on Ten with R4-D6 on Biggs to deal with Kath). I replaced the feedback arrays and Kath's PTL+K4 with Predator, Gunner, and Interial Dampners.

Things I learned; I need to be careful with Kath. She takes a lot of firepower and things like Ten or Wedge* can cut her down pretty quickly. I also need to remember gunner triggers when I use it; It's not too hard to remember when you always have it like in Brobots, but I missed the first trigger and that might have changed the results.

*Friendly game I played afterword with my stock list vs the same guy
