Help me understand boba, can't make him work.

By TIEActor, in X-Wing

Well, we know he's alive. That was never actually in question.

The question, which we don't have a definitive answer for, is, "Did Boba Fett escape from the Sarlaac?"

Since, you know, the thing takes decades if not centuries to digest people and keeps them alive for the duration.

Run him in fast. Use his ability to make killing him super hard. Hop over the enemy and flank with your badly damaged but functional firespray while the rest of your fleet handles the remainder of combat.

If you allow your opponent to shoot at him, he will die just like any Firespray dies.

So you need to either give your opponent a reason to not shoot at him (because they're shooting at another ship instead) or prevent your opponent from shooting at him (by arc-dodging).

Except Disney says that he escapes and lives on.

got a source for that?

New battlefront trailer, this article explains it.http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2015/04/disney-makes-it-official-that-boba-fett-survived-the-sarlacc-in-return-of-the-jedi.html

Sometimes I wonder if google exists (seriously first result)

In my defence, the reason I was too lazy to google it was because I was anticipating 30 pages of nerdrage on forums over Boba's survival being relegated to Legends

I personally dont understand how anyone can think Boba's new ability is bad or think he dies all that easily. Maybe he just doesnt fit your playstyle and that is fine... but in my experience Boba's ability has been one of the most powerful I have played with. He is up there with Fel and Darth for who's abilities I like the most. One example is I flew him into range 1 of a 7 tie swarm, killed Howlrunner, and after being shot by 7 (howl still got the shot obviously) at range one he had only lost 2 shields. His ability canceled 8!!! hits I would have taken if not for rerolls.

The way I play him is I run him into enemy ships that have lower PS. He doesnt care about the loss of action and that will guarantee at least one reroll for attack and defense while removing at least one enemy from shooting back at him. If I dont collide then I boost out of arcs or turtle with him. He puts out insane damage with range one shots and is really good at hunting ships. Currently I am using Inertial Dampners but as soon as Glitterstim comes out I am switching to that. Glitterstim is nutty as all hell on Scum Boba. I have tested him in a number of games and Glitterstim plus Cluster Missiles on the first turn of combat basically gives you two 3 dice attacks with rerolls and focus as well as focus for each defense. I have yet to take more than 1 or 2 damage with glitterstim (and that is including against swarms and BBBBZ)

It is true you have to fly Boba differently to make the most of him but dont confuse different with bad. I would take Bobas ability over Kaths any day (although I will agree that Kath has an amazing ability as well)

I have recently been trying a dual list with Boba and Emon. It is a ton of fun and Boba has been amazing in every game I have played.

That won't work every time and I've had 8 z's kill Boba when rushed into range 1. It's way too risky. His ability looks good on paper but isn't that good in reality.

Does anyone still run Empire boba? I have no desire to get into scum (I know i'm missing out right now, but I want to build my Rebel and Imperial fleets more) for the moment, are their any decent casual boba builds out there?

I've had moderate success with;

Scum Boba (50)

- Lone Wolf

- Engine Upgrade

- Gunner

His ability isn't great for running head long into a swarm, that's just silly, but with lone wolf if you end up dog fighting 1 or 2 ships, you're rerolling all of your attack and defense rolls. You can evade or focus for defense pretty much exclusively, and with Gunner you shoot, reroll, if you miss, shoot again, reroll.

It's brutal.

He could catch all the Phantoms in his firing arc and fire before they could recloak.

It worked really well.

But that was a tournament where everyone(myself included) was going to be runnign Phantoms.

8 range 1 Z's is the most firepower a list can bring to bear in the game. Of course you died. That's your misplay. Not a flaw in the strategy itself.

That rerolling seriously useful. If you can give him a bodyguard of some kind it's even better.

OT on Fett- In the book "The Mandalorian Armor" it chronicles how Fett blow up his backpack to throw him clear of the Sarlacc. The explosion nearly killed him, but fellow bounty hunter Dengar found him and decided it would be profitable to help Fett recover.

Don't know why people are taking a trailer showcasing that hero units appear in Battlefront as evidence of Boba Fett escaping the Sarlacc. It's not a trailer for a post-ROTJ Boba Fett game, it's a trailer for a multiplayer shooter showing off that hero uits are still involved, including Boba Fett. Darth Vader's in said trailer too, and he certainly didn't survive post-ROTJ.

Back on topic, I still haven't tried Scum Boba yet, mainly because I haven't approached him properly. Too often I've looked at pilots based on their ability, instead of viewing them as a PS8 ship or whatnot. I'll definitely take that into consideration in future builds. Emon and Kath's abilities are great, but a pilot skill 8 Firespray is a very good ship.

This a million times. It's the only thing I could think of reading through this whole **** thread. THANK YOU. Also the game is confirmed to be multiplayer only, so I don't know why people are acting as if this is indicative of a narrative-driven and therefore canon game -- because it's not.

As for TC's question, I enjoy Scum Boba (or Scum Firesprays at all) being accompanied with Palob and slapping Opportunist on the Firespray. Palob's ability makes it a bit more ideal for Boba to enjoy his Range 1 boost, while Opportunist ensures someone is not going to emerge from the slugfest in good shape. The Firespray's green maneuvers are also friendly to clearing stress while maintaining range 1, or at the very least a shot in the auxiliary arc.

As for crew in this setup, Recon Specialist is just so good on a Firespray it's hard to not want to take it. However, for Scum, K4 Security Droid also shines in situations where you're trying to clear stress for a juicy attack.

Then you're missing out. He can handle 2-3 just fine, 4 if you're ok with him limping away.

This. His ability is bonkers even when in the face of a swarm. Its true that right now it is still a tad risky but try proxying glitterstim on it. While playing with glittering boba for that first range one encounter I take little damage if any, especially from swarm. Unless all 8 ships have rerolls (which is why i nuke howl that first turn before they get to reroll) then they will average roughly 2 damage each if using focus... and Im averaging 2 evades for each roll. Between boba's ability giving the reroll of the blanks and glitterstim turning all eyes into evades you will find that you will get the double evade far more than you would expect.

I havent tried to use bodyguard in tandem but I kinda want to... not sure if its worth it but it seems like it would be hella fun, especially for that first glittering turn of r1 combat ^_^

Imp boba is ok but I only run him as a ps 8 firespray... I just couldnt get his ability to work in non epic play. the mat is simply too small. In almost every situation where I would want to change a bank there was either a rock or another ship in the way. Out of a few dozen games I played with Imp boba I only actually used his ability a couple times. Still good for the ps8 and ps10 with VI back when it was really needed for hunting phantoms.

Scum boba may not be for everyone as his ability does reward high risk high reward plays but it is an insanely good ability. Im looking forward to playing with him much more and taking him to some bigger tournaments once glitterstim is released.

If you do use scum boba my advice is dont be afraid to lose your action to bumping. Its really fun to run right into an enemy ship so they cant shoot you but still gives you the rerolls for when you shoot at another ship and defend from the rest of their list. His ability makes me not even care about losing that ability (sure its nice to have and if you dont have to give it up dont but the point is that you will be just fine without it if you go gung ho and bump ships to help mitigate attacks.)

SchrÖdinger's Fett!

My backpack's got jets (or not)!

I'm Schroedinger's Fett!

I bounty hunt, for the Jabba Hutt, to finance my Vette (or not!)

The introduction of Glitterstim will make every Slave 1 pilot really good. 2 dice might be decidingly average defence, but if the dice are fixed towards rolling eyeballs and successes then that critical turn that you are forced to make that critical engagement will come out in your favour. Only IG-88 is better in that regard, and that doesn't have a second arc to shoot out of. Sure, it's a bad policy to be in the firing arc of too many ships, but it's good to have an insurance policy against that and use it as a opportunity to get your support into arc.

Boba really is best as being treated as a high skill firespray, don't ram him right into the swarm but use his superior speed (with engine upgrade or expert handling) to get the best possible engagements.

I have been playing Scum Boba for all but the first week of release for Scum; I love him.

My main goal in building a list for him is to make him as tanky as possible.

I've survived some serious alpha strikes with minimal damage.
