New Idea for Balancing

By arwaker, in Blood Bowl: Team Manager

As most people agree that the teams are badly balanced, i've tested several different approaches to even them up. Yesterday i had a new idea, that does not need changes in existing cards.

Every team starts with one starplayer of their own race. As the specific stars have very diffenrent values, one can even up the teams by wisely choosing this start-star-player.

For Example:

Dwarfs (a weak team) start with the Deathroller (a very strong star player)

Undead (a strong team) starts with Hack'En Lash (one of the weaker star players)

The difficulty now is to find the perfect star for each team. What do you think about it and what star players would you recommend?

I can't say I agree with you original statement. I think with the notable exception of Dwarfs, the other teams are quite well balanced.

Having said that, considering that Dwarfs have so little access to sprint, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if you started them off with a deathroller and ditched a lineman.

Even if not considering Dwarfs, one can recognize that for example Vampire are significantly weaker than Undead.

It's maybe an avenue to look at.

I'd agree with the statement that all teams are not equal and some are particularily outside the norm.

Dwarves, Vampires, Undeads and to a lesser extent (based on our games) dark elves.

Dwarves really don't need much to start being viable, and from what we've seen it's not linked to their ability to tackle (block) their opponent, but rather the fact that they are stuck with whatever hands they get in rotation. Lack of sprint is what makes it a problem when playing vs teams with sprint, and the lack of a 4 power player cuts them down when facing orcs for example. So i wouldn't add a death roller to the team from the get go, it's overkill. We did test the team with a free team upgrade (the free sprint for the use of the guard skill) and they had more success.

It's why we decided to change the sprint/foul skill in the end, solved that issue for teams who don't get access to it, while still providing a nice bonus to those who do. However, even after this change...it does seem that the Vampire and Undead team are still respectively under and over the crowd.

I've always thought every team should start with a Star Player in any case just to crank up the deck-building aspect because as is, you only start to have a good, diverse deck by round 5 and then it's over.

Balancing I think has to determined by the group dynamic observed over time and then only if there is a glaring disparity. I don't what it is but I've been in games where Dwarves rocked the supposedly better teams. Even if unbalance could be demonstrated, I'm not sure it warrants making all teams zero-sum to each other.
