can you break it down by state?
Some Stats on the X-Wing Community
I guess I'm an outlier as a married 44 yr old. At least I'm not as much an outlier as a Nigerian woman!
I know how you feel. I'm married 45 year old. So were both outliers
I'm curious, how are these stats collected?
Purely with Google Analytics. Google tracks you around the web and builds a profile based on a) your web activity and b) your Google account (presumably where they get your age and gender). I guess they probably use your Gmail account, too. Google does only release this data anonymously and aggregated though (ie. averaged among many sets of stats).
So while I know I have a visitor in Nigeria, I don't really know who they are or whether they are a woman or aged 65+ or into fantasy films. I hope they are, though.
It's nothing to do with Facebook. That's just the login.

First off, thank you for your work! Your engine is awesome!
I wonder if you need to pay more to Google in order to get more correlative data - the type that connects the variables at the individual level - so that you can run crosstabs and other analytical methods. Obviously, it isn't worth it for you (or me), but it would still be cool to have deeper insight.
Looks like an accurate breakdown of my game night at the LGS.
For starters, if you log in with facebook there's connectivity there. Analytics of this level is also free. (Google Analytics, for example).I'm curious, how are these stats collected?
Also, anytime you go to a website you give up a lot of public information. Your up address can be used to locate you, your browser tells the website what OS you're using. Your cookies tell the ads how to target you. And so forth and so on.

One note on the lack of women - while it's pretty clear overall that X-wing is heavily male biased, remember that you're looking at gender based on web browsing. So it's entirely likely some of those "males" are actually females with male browsing habits.
Does anyone else imagine the 65+ year old Nigerian woman being an X-Wing prodigy? I have a mental image of her coming to Worlds and owning Paul Heaver on the final table.
But given the option: would she use the force to win?

Male browsing habits, or a false male identity?

what are male browsing habits? lol
Visiting hobby sites that are traditionally considered interesting primarily to males, e.g. miniatures wargaming. If you have zero additional data other than "this person looked at X-Wing Miniatures, Warmachine, and Warhammer sites," you would have a high probability of being correct in assuming the user is male.
I used X Wing Squadron Builder a lot of times. Thank you for the job. And I'm sorry, but I'm 35, married and from Spain ![]()
Well that was eerily accurate. I think I hit everyone of the top demographics save 1. EERILY.

Looking at pr0n.
I am the female Nigerian.
(not really ^^)

They're not guessing, they know your gender based on your facebook profile, which you use to login to Voidstate. The only way the data would be incorrect is if a huge number of women using voidstate have also lied about their gender on facebook. The point of analytics is to figure out what demographics are looking at your website, not to guess someone's gender based on their browsing habits, that's the opposite of what analytics is trying to do.
I would warn of 2 things here. First, don't take this data as a representation of the X-Wing player base as a whole, this data just represents the people that sign in when they use the Voidstate builder. Not every player in the game is going online to build lists, the ones that do might not be using voidstate (even though it's the best imo), and the ones that use voidstate might not log in to save lists.
Second, making a big deal about gender disparity in the game could end up being counter-productive. Tabletop games are equally popular with both men and women, I see lots of women playing on boardgame night at the LGS, as is the Star Wars IP, but miniature war games in particular tend to appeal more to men by nature. That doesn't mean women don't play war games, we know they do, but it means that a low number of female players isn't necessarily indicative of a problem.
As long as the players in your community are being decent human beings and good ambassadors for the game, maintaining good hygiene and not making sexist/racist/rapey jokes or comments and being generally friendly (which I have found most X-Wing players to be), then the women that are interested will feel welcome and safe to play the game.
But I've found that making a big deal out of it and trying to proactively fix the "problem" can both alienate potential women players by emphasizing the problem to them, and it also brings out the worst players in the game that are a small minority that don't want women in the game or don't care about women, who make ignorant and malicious comments that damage the community's image as a whole.
Instead of thinking "how can we bring more women into the game", we should all be thinking "how can we be a more welcoming and inclusive community to all types of people in general".

While I could be wrong, from what I could see of what voidstate posted he was using the Google Analytics breakdown of gender, which is based on advertiser data -- which is habit based. Actually, awhile back you could look up what Google thought about you and years ago I was indeed "male" to Google advertisers. (They finally fixed it awhile ago.)
But hey, voidstate feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - maybe that was from Facebook which of course has gender as set on profiles.

Hate to think what Google Analytics thinks of me then.... I'm male but my misses uses my account for different sites (such as Amazon etc) or leaves me logged in whilst she browses stuff

I totally wish more females will play X-wing. I'm the only one in my table-top group that plays.
Well actually only my boyfriend and I plays in that group (And it took some convincing to get him onboard). The rest aren't that interested cos of the money they'd have to spend.
The only time they'll play is if they borrow our sets and even then the other 3 girls in the group have no interest.
