Some Stats on the X-Wing Community

By voidstate, in X-Wing

I was just perusing the stats for my squadron builder and thought maybe some other people would be interested in seeing how our community breaks down. I get around 25,000 visits a week so I reckon this is a pretty accurate sample.

Not too many surprises, but still interesting.

First, age:

And gender:

Location:

And finally, interests:

So the average X-Winger is a man, aged between 25 and 34 from the US, who's interested in gaming, sci-fi and fantasy films, tech... and dating. ;)

Although there are also apparently some women aged over 65 from Nigeria playing, too. :D

Cheers

I guess I'm an outlier as a married 44 yr old. At least I'm not as much an outlier as a Nigerian woman!

I'm curious, how are these stats collected?

Also, anytime you go to a website you give up a lot of public information. Your up address can be used to locate you, your browser tells the website what OS you're using. Your cookies tell the ads how to target you. And so forth and so on.

Big Brother...

Does anyone else imagine the 65+ year old Nigerian woman being an X-Wing prodigy? I have a mental image of her coming to Worlds and owning Paul Heaver on the final table.

Purely with Google Analytics. Google tracks you around the web and builds a profile based on a) your web activity and b) your Google account (presumably where they get your age and gender). I guess they probably use your Gmail account, too. Google does only release this data anonymously and aggregated though (ie. averaged among many sets of stats).

So while I know I have a visitor in Nigeria, I don't really know who they are or whether they are a woman or aged 65+ or into fantasy films. I hope they are, though.

It's nothing to do with Facebook. That's just the login.

I would pay money to watch. Not hating on Paul at all, but it would be epic.

So what does the dating service in the In-market segment mean?

Is that how ads for this app was first found?

Sorry bro, my data is closely guarded by Ghostery, Disconnect, AdBlock and a few other extensions that I...wait, I login through FB.

Drat.

I love it when I see stats at my little blog saying that someone found me by typing in some crazy phrase.

I can machine her saying "If you view C-3PO as a state of mind, not a statistical disadvantage towards you, then will you be enlightened to win tournaments."

She also plays 8-Z Scum Swarm because moving at PS1 and 3 is more important than having an initiative bid for shooting.

Uh excuse me what about age 14-18?

She only plays Tie Swarms because- if you can keep everything in your head at once (and she can)- it's still the best build in the game.

Uh excuse me what about age 14-18?

I think due to some privacy and child safety concerns data like that is unavailable to the public.

That doesn't meant that child consumer data is not collected at all. Marketers love for nothing more than to get Jr. or Princess to whine and complain, tantrum and cry until mom/dad/legal guardian buys that desired product for the little brat.

There is also the issue that children in that age range don't buy products unless they get money from parents/guardians so more often than not advertisements for children products is more directed at parents than children.

Uh excuse me what about age 14-18?

edit: wow - literally just ninj'd

I'd suspect because of privacy laws (in the US at least) - Google, if it doesn't capture it, at least won't report on the activity of minors

I disbelieve all that data because none of it had anything to do with half the internet, which is porn.

Somehow none of this surprises me.

Apart from living in the UK and being married, I'm your typical XWMG player.

Shame about the lack of women, but I'm not sure how we'd improve that.

I tried to get my wife to play but she wasn't keen (tried it once). She plays plenty of other tabletop games with me though so I can't complain.

I had Googled that (thank you very much) and none of those results indicate that Google and Facebook share data, only that you can detect social buttons being clicked with Google Analytics on the same page and that you can use Google Analytics on a Facebook page (although this involves a hack with images).

In terms of using the data people enter into their Facebook accounts as part of analytics, I'm afraid there isn't any connectivity.
