Fat-Han, Chewie vs R2D2?

By Sixter, in X-Wing

Does anyone here use Chewie crew with C3PO on the Falcon instead of R2D2? I know R2D2 can work wonders if you have a 1v1 endgame and if you get to use him in a convenient damage sequence (no face-down damage cards yet). There are times when R2D2 is of no use because you get bad luck with the red die and he can actually end up causing you a bad crit. Before the CR-90 became available I used to run Chewie on Han and I loved how he was a guarantee against that first really bad crit Han would receive.

You mentioned the main point of R2D2 over Chewy... It's a guaranteed 3 evade every turn. Which makes him immune to 3 dice attacks, and most 4 dice attacks. Chewy is nice since it makes him a 8 hull 7 shield ship, ignoring a crit of your choice (so perhaps call it a 8 hull 8 shield ship since often that'll be a direct hit). And it can take a long time to whittle through that, especially at avoiding 2 damage a turn. But R2D2 is almost always going to be better due to evading an extra damage (which more often than not will be a crit itself since the first two damage gets evaded).

Chewie gives you 2 max. R2D2 doesn't have a cap on recoverable damage. He's way better in almost any situation.

R2D2's best trick is that he stymies Gunner. You aren't actually evading 3, you are evading 2 and taking a shield damage, so you get hit and Gunner is stymied.

R2D2 is better in most situations, but there is nothing wrong with Chewy crew.

In the Chewie vs. R2D2 debate Chewbacca is just as useful against Gunner as R2D2. A ship needs to be suffering damage for Chewie to work and if that is from an attack that means the attack already hit and Gunner will not trigger.

Isn't Chewie crew just a Shield Upgrade with a free Hull Upgrade tacked on that can be used at any time?

That, and you can keep it for that finishing or crippling Critical (i.e. Direct Hit).

Chewie makes sense on hwks, r2d2 will give you a lot more value on a yt.

That being said, now that er have autothrusters, I wouldn't play a large ship without gunner. And since c3p0 is auto include on yts poor r2d2 has no spot.

With that being said, we might just be seeing yts getting pushed out of the meta because people can focus their meta hate away from the phantoms towards big turret ships.

Its an interesting time.

Well yes, sorta. If you have 3P0, Falcon Title, and Chewy, and are getting shot at by a ship with Gunner and they do 2 attack on the first attack, you have two choices. You can evade both hits with 3P0 and the evade action, but then you may have to use up Chewbacca crew on the follow up Gunner shot. Or you could not spend the evade token and take 1 damage, which you will eventually want to spend Chewbacca on. But, if you have R2D2 crew, you will almost always take the first damage from the first shot to the shield that R2D2 regenerated. If you do that, Gunner will never trigger. So R2D2 can almost totally negate the Gunner cards, but Chewbacca is used up on the Gunner shot.

Chewbacca is more like two Shield Upgrades: He lets you discard an incoming card and then give you a shield token back to deflect the next damage you'd take.

R2D2 and Chewbacca almost do the exact same thing except R2D2 can last longer BUT has a potential drawback for using it. IF the only damage you are taking is 1 each turn the R2D2 can be superior but if you'd be taking 2 damage then you're going to take cards and R2D2 may start turning them over on you. With Chewbacca you'd spend the card when some damage you want/need to stop comes through but then you get a shield token back to stop another damage from coming through.

If it gets used three or more times the R2D2 is likely the better choice but it doesn't have the burst protection that Chewie has.
