Why do you like Star Wars XWing??

By Blail Blerg, in X-Wing

Crazy question right?? =)

Post away!

It's a game. It's Star Wars. I like games and Star Wars.

I was a born Star Wars fan. My Dad loved Star Wars and I'd watch the OT and watch him play the old Star Wars PC games for hours on end as a toddler. When I was old enough for Legos and Micromachines, I guess you can say I was privileged enough to have awesome parents to get me Star Wars stuff. Even the Prequels were great for me. I loved playing Battlefront and Starfighter in my elementary and middle school days. Even in high school, my photography, art and creative writing pieces revolved around Star Wars.

I also got into miniature gaming through friends and the sheer coolness factor of 40k, but I got fed up with it after awhile. I discovered X-Wing through a bunch of friends who played Magic and I instantly fell in love with it. The miniatures were reminiscent of my old lego and micromachines days, it was like playing a video game, but it required all the tactilcal and instinctual planning and strategizing. It's just a fantastic game no matter what people say about it, and yeah, I sound like a fanboy, because I am. But I don't care because I love Star Wars and I feel like I've finally found a game I can enjoy whether I win or lose.

Oh yeah, and because I'm about 99% sure the models are laced with nicotine and cocaine so we can get subconsciously addicted to it as well.

Love the characters, the sounds and music, the space ships and the WWI-like space combat.

Because it's 1977 again every time I play the game with my kids.

1-It is Star Wars. (my first non-cartoon/non Disney 'true' movie as a kid)

2-It plays fast (60-75 minutes means you can get in several games in an evening)

3-It has pretty good balance. I can bring anything well-thought out I like and have a solid shot at whatever my opponent flies.

4-It *looks* pretty. (but that might be no.1 talking again)

Because it's Star Wars dogfighting.

Because pre-painted miniatures and a 60-90 minute play time fit in well with my somewhat packed schedule. (I've got a lot of unpainted and unassembled models for other games at home that are waiting for me to have the free time to do something with them.)

Because it's a great balance between strategy, reading and bluffing your opponent, and luck. :-)

Edit - And it's affordable enough for me to have decent options for multiple factions at the same time, which is very handy for getting other people involved. I do a lot of my gaming with my old university gaming society, and being able to easily let models out has resulted in me playing X-Wing a lot more than I might have been able to do otherwise.

It's a game. It's Star Wars. I like games and Star Wars.

Also: it's a really, really, really GOOD game.

Its quick and easy to pick up and just fly a casual game but has a lot of depth to really get sucked into.

It looks pretty sweet on a board too.... oh and one little thing, ITS STAR WARS!!

I also agree with Spike...I swear those miniatures are laced with drugs, I always need more!

X-Wings. Pure and simple. Without competition, they are the coolest looking spaceships in sci-fi.

I was born in 78 and my first experience of SW was watching the version my grandfather recorded on VHS off TV. My brothers and cousins have watched that version so many times we can quote the advertisements (my cousin was even in one).

I don't know how many times I attempted to make X-Wings and Ties with Lego to recreate that climactic battle at Yavin.

1. Because Star Wars.

2. Because X-wings.

3. Because dogfighting.

4. Because it's a fast moving game, with attractive pieces, that is easy to learn but with a great detail of complexity, that offers a fun simulation of iconic moments in my favorite movies and spin-off books and games.

Oh yeah, and because I'm about 99% sure the models are laced with nicotine and cocaine so we can be subconsciously addicted to it as well.

Most definitely laced with some kind of cocaine!

X wing has released the geek in me and I love it :)

I also love spending copious amounts of money on little plastic models...and boxes to keep them in...and protective sleeves for all the cards... :D

Like everyone has been saying its star wars game ( and I'm a sucker for any star wars game good or bad ), and it's a great tactical miniature game at that! Unlike miniature games like 40k or fantasy its nice to just pop out a unit and have it painted and based(not that I don't enjoy that aspect but sometimes you can get so backed up).

The challenge of out thinking while warmongering other like minded players from the games beginning to the end phases that involving's planning and stratifying infinite set ups that counter the other players options on the board and then to watching the dice roll and by chance, hoping that it all pays off, so destroy or be destroyed. Oh, also while flying in a star wars universe is just way-way too c0ol.

...because if you fly well and have average luck, you can win with any list.

I was at a Warhammer Fantasy tournament filled with power lists and had lost all 3 games that day when someone pulled out the starter pack. I played 2 generic Tie Fighters vs. Luke Skywalker w/ R2-D2. I had Luke dead in about 5 rounds.

It's also freakin' STAR WARS! I was born in 1970, so was 7 years old when it came out. Perfect age.

I'm sorry my friend, but my nervous subjective response-system has to let it out. Please don't take an offense on my account.

"""""_**BE--KUH--ZZZ DUH!!!!!_**""""

Sorry bout that.

Now, on to my objective mode. I--LOVE--IT. Nothing more to say. Its just perfect for my weak nostalgic heart. I want to let everything, EVERYTHING, out to tell you how much I love it, and why; but this thread might get locked up for reasons like "Extensive-Unnecesary-Nonsense". Thank you very much for posting this thread. I was able to Let my Love out.

It makes me happy.

The fast pace and generally accessible models are the selling points for me. I know what I'm getting when I spend my money. The relatively simple rule set goes a long was too. 18 page rule book vs the 18 pounds of competing games. All that makes for a more friendly atmosphere to play in as well. People don't mind losing as much because it doesn't represent a wasted three hours for them.

Fast paced, initiative based not igoyougo., Star wars, Miniatures, rules arguments are at an absolute minimum compared to certain other games, relatively easy to make scenario based/campaign play, fun - with awesome game moments of coolness/intensity. Ruleset mostly balanced. The nostalgia from playing the absolute hell of the x-wing series of games as well as all the LA games from the 90s definitely helps.

Things that could be better: weapon balance, ability for pilots to gain xp / RPG qualities. Need a good dynamic campaign, the ones we've seen are quite weak/not dynamic enough. If a sourcebook mixed X-wing with imperial assault i'd actually buy into imp assault.

Generic pilots, especially mid tier ones are quite weak compared to the aces. Obsidian and Avenger squadron pilots, Shadow Squadron also get hurt.

There are exceptions, but those exceptions usually have EPTs. Aside from that though, the goods massively outweigh the bads in this game.

Because it reminds me a great deal of playing X-Wing vs Tie Fighter. Which I loved because X-Wings...

It's also one of the better tabletop mini games I've played. There's others I enjoy but they're all normally fairly expensive, fairly long to play and require a lot more space.

Love the characters, the sounds and music, the space ships and the WWI-like space combat.

Of course I meant the music in your head and the sounds you make with your mouth while playing...

It's been said but:

1) It gives a wargame feel - without the massive upfront investment of time, money and effort, like most alternatives

2) It has instant gratification; you can play straight out of the box

3) You spend 10 minutes reading the rulebook and then never have to again

4) It's star wars!

Because:

- I like games

- I like SciFi

- I like building fleets and armies and to search for next great combo

- I don't have to paint the minis but I can do so

- I think the required time to play as well as the required table size are just perfect

- the game is very well done, mini-wise and rule-wise (this is why I prefere it to Star Trek Attack Wing)

- the game is easy to learn but also has a high tactical and strategical depth

- the game is easily accessible, you can buy it in a lot of brick and mortar stores (and often pay there) as well as online-shops

- it also remindes me a lot of the days and weeks I spend with my friends in the 90s playing X-Wing and X-Wing vs. TIE-Fighter over LAN (nostalgia)

Simply put, I play X-Wing for two reasons...

For one, I enjoy intricate games that test your tactical planning. My core group of friends (most of us went to high school together) enjoy any game that gives us healthy competition. All of us go nuts over every kind of synergy we discover between certain elements in games (we primarily play Magic, but I'm slowly infecting everyone with the X-Wing virus). And since my group of friends was pretty much all top of the class in high school, we've always reveled in testing our wits against one another. So far, X-Wing has more than stood up to Magic and the video games I play in terms of fun.

And two, I love Star Wars. I was born in 1988, three years after the Original Trilogy had been released on VHS. So I wasn't around for the theatrical releases, but the VHS tapes were always around for me. And I couldn't get enough. My extended family was never too big on Star Wars, but I made Star Wars a staple in my family's house growing up. My siblings love it too. We had (and my mom still has) just about every kind of Star Wars merchandise you can think of. And a lot of those beloved items will stay with my family for a long time.

I was known as "the Star Wars guy" at Lindenwood University for just about my entire time there. I shot a Star Wars fan film as my Masters project. I had lightsaber parties (which almost always ended with at least one broken lightsaber). While working in LUTV, I did at least one news story and hosted a talk show about Star Wars. I wrote a 50 page Masters Thesis about how Star Wars as both a movie and a franchise helped shape the evolution of digital cinema. My ultimate professional goal in life is to work and contribute to the Star Wars universe in a lasting way.

I feel like a parrot, but....

I like x-wing because:

1. Its Star Wars

2. the models look great.

3. fast, simple but fun gameplay.

4. list building is fun.

5. fun community events.

6. I truly enjoy Fantasy Flights products. Star Wars and otherwise. I'm also a big Netrunner fan.

*I used the word 'fun' way too much.
