Gaming Board Size

By Lendosan, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Quick question, what is the standard board size? At 100 points we all play on a 2` by 2`, however it appears to be a little tight on the turns, so I was going to start playing on a 3` by 3`.

Is there any rules regarding the board size, and if so, where could I find them?

Standard board size is 914mm x 914mm or 3ft by 3ft in old money

Core Rules page 4:

The Play Area
X-Wing is not played on a board.Instead, it is played on any flat surface with at least 3’ x 3’ of space. Players may want to use a felt or cloth surface, which provides a little friction and helps to prevent players from accidentally bumping or moving the ships. For a game with three ships, the play area should be 3’ x 3’. Experienced players should feel free to experiment with different play area sizes.

and page 2 of the tournament rules:

Each table must contain a 3’ by 3’ square play area with clearly delineated edges.

That pretty much sums it up.

Thanks Funk!

4x4 is also fun. and of course 3x6 for epic..

Yeah, been looking at stuff and I just want to make a 3x3 board for home. Those mats you can buy are great, but not too good if you have to put them on a 2x3 table, as the edges fall off.

So I just wanted to make sure before I started buying materials etc. Nothing like buying a 2x2 piece of MDF and associated hardware to then find its useless!

8x4 peg board from lowes less than 10 bucks. cut it to 3x4 for normal 3x3 mat to be placed on it. or cut it to 7x3 for epic play area. the extra space at the ends is/are for your cards/range rulers etc.. I made one for my LGS because i got tired of moving the "magic" tables around so a 3x3 mat would fit on his tables. simply lay it down on what ever under size table you have available. i got creative and also clued on some wooden edges to help keep cards/tokens from sliding off the ends as well. Also Lowes will cut on site if your not handy. and even if you are their machine makes straighter cuts!! just saying..lol

Thanks for the advice Swedge, but I am from the UK. We have B&Q, so I get the idea :)

Thanks for the tip though ;)

I bought a 4x3 and painted the 3x3 area on it as a starfield. You then have 6" either side for pilot cards and such.

have seen folks use foam insulation board as well. but I would think its just to light and easily bumped or broken.

If you want something a bit nicer, you might want to take a look at this gaming top - http://www.guardian-tablepad.com/gametabletop.html.

I ended up getting a custom extension pad 48" x 80" overall from them to fit on top of my oval dining room table. Now I've got a nice rectangular surface for an Epic game.
