i wonder as the core set provide more equipment for less money when wanting 1 neb, 1 corvette, and 1 VSD; but purchasing those independently as the expansions will provide a different set of upgrade cards.

definitely think i will want those upgrade cards, but would rather get a 2nd core set for price plus additional gear.

You might find them on the Bay of E, and some stores will break apart sets and sell them. It's unlikely that FFG will.

in our store we have been allowing multiple ships per upgrade card but realize that for tournament play its not allowed.

An upgrade pack containing all the current upgrade cards is something I have been hoping FFG will do with X-wing and Armada. They could even put new upgrade cards in the packs to incentivise us buying them. How about $10 for one copy of all the ship title and named cards and two copies of all the other upgrade cards? If they are going to require official cards for tourney play I think it makes sense for us to have additional ways to acquire them beyond buying ship packs.

They won't do that unless something changes. They've looked at it 2 or 3 times now in X-Wing and every time they've said it doesn't make sense financially for them to do it.

So unless something changes the finances of it, it won't happen.

EBay will be the way to go. In fact you can already get singles from the core set there.

This guy will be using sleeves, a photocopy, and a reasonably stiff 'cut to fit' card stock for backing. Three ships came in the box. I will supply a representative card for each upgarde but I won't supply an 'Original' amount of cards if I wasn't supplied with enough 'Original' cards to satisfy base game composition.

This issue has and continues to bug me. FFG is the gold standard in the gaming industry right now IMO. This business with the upgrade cards, and the playmat requirements to a somewhat lesser extent, feels like more of a money grab tactic than it does an attempt to encourage a competitive play community. I know all this has been said before and I'll still love FFG and their products if they don't address it. I simply can't afford to buy the same expansion set several times just to get multiples of a tiny card.

They have addressed the card issue. Unfortunately, it's not to everyone's liking. That said, I think that it's pretty clear that upgrade cards just aren't going to have the same amount of impact that they do in X-Wing. In addition, just going through the previews for Waves 1 & 2, it looks like FFG has done a pretty good job of spreading the various upgrade cards around so that the amount of buying expansions just to get a single card for those who only want to collect one side is minimized.

I think that it's pretty clear that upgrade cards just aren't going to have the same amount of impact that they do in X-Wing. That is definitely encouraging. It does seem like the upgrade cards are less game changing than they can be in X-wing at this point. Hopefully that balance will be maintained.

From Kant's point of view that's immoral. That would damage whole idea of good customer service. All of that just because you want second copy of a card you would seldom use.

I will say that so far, I don't use a lot of upgrade cards in my games especially at 300pts.

You should realize that FFG is a card and model company, not a game company. Much like GW and PP, they make their money off of the sales of cards and miniatures. The game rules are just the engine to drive sales. If they could sell the same amount of product without producing game rules they would since they wouldn't have to worry about the expense of game development.

GW, sure, they've said as much. It is there defense as to why thier games are so poorly made. In thier own view they are not in the business of making games.

PP on the other hand produces some quality games. Not just miniature games anymore either but lines of boardgames not affiliated with thier Iron Kingdom IP.

And FFG, you've got to be smoking something on that one. Up until recently they didn't do more then dabble in miniatures games. It's only been in the last few years they'very produced a successful consistent miniatures game in X-wing. The vast majority of thier catalog is various board, card, and role playing games. And while X-wing is thier single best selling product the majority of thier sales still come from thier non-miniature lines.

FFG is nothing if not a company in the business of making games. But they are absolutely still a business and as such they are going to package and price thier product in a way that is going to allow them to make money from me. And I have no problem with that as they've consistently improved thier product and developed other games I enjoy. Armada does not exist without X-wings initial success.

I'd gladly give FFG my money if they would sell them. I'm not going through the trouble of trying to find them second hand. And as a reble player, there are most certainly cards that I would use 2 and 3 of.

Sorry, but they're not gouging you. FFG has made cards available in a certain way, and you are welcome to buy them, or not.
