General tactics question when facing A big turret ship and a cheap escort...

By Shirako, in X-Wing

When you guys run into Han + 3 Headhunters or 2 Rookies, or Dash with a similar escort, do you focus down the big guy or knock down his escort first? I fly either 3 named interceptors or 2 named T/I and Whisper.

It depends on what I'm flying. If I'm flying my 4 Tie Bomber list, then I fire everything at the big ship. I then mop up against the little ships.

If I have my own big ship, like the Decimator, I'll go for the little ships first as they can cream you with all those paper cuts.

If you have a lot of 3 Agility ships, then focus on the big ship first.

So...whichever can cause your list the most damage the fastest.

Depends on your list. If you have Corran then just kill his escorts. If you have a lot of ships then try to burn Han down.

I always go for whatever I don't want to see in the endgame first. Usually that means focus everything on the phantom. Same with big Ships.

Because if I loose half my list while taking down a fat ship, I'll still take he remnant of my list vs tala z-95's any day. As opposed to a remnant of my list vs a fat ship.

the best tactic against fatties is "roll well"

who to focus on is going to vary based on list and positioning

I've found that headhunters and 2 dice ships in general really struggle against 3+ agility, and because they're so stiff you can potentially ignore them if you use obstacles to your advantage. This gives you license to focus on Han first.

With low agility, the headhunters will give you fits and you probably want to remove them first. Cross your fingers that the dice don't **** you, because spending too many rounds on headhunters will make Han unkillable. But hey, that's what primary turrets do: reduce the tactical game to craps.

IF Han's chumming around with Corran, know that Corran is far easier to kill than Han if you focus your fire. Splitting your fire against Han/Corran is easily the worst thing you can do between c3po triggers and r2-d2.

Against every big ship minus Dash, obstructions are your friends (unless you're running something unwieldy like a swarm) as they'll limit their hyper mobility.

But basically, whatever you do, focus your fire. C3PO gets ungodly powerful if allowed to trigger repeatedly over multiple rounds, as does r2-d2 (either variant)

Choose your early targets based on what you want to be fighting at the end of the game.

Fat Han is evil because it's just so hard to kill at any point in the game, and an boosting PS 9 Falcon can be tough to pin down. But you have to try to kill him first because it's easier to deal with three Headhunters in the late game.

Against every big ship minus Dash, obstructions are your friends (unless you're running something unwieldy like a swarm) as they'll limit their hyper mobility.

Even though he'll be able to BR/boost off of it if he plops down on one, that's still using 1 of his actions for movement as opposed to offensive/defensive buffing. It may also obstruct his shot. A Dash player doesn't have to fear obstacles, but they still want to avoid them as much as possible.

just don't get too tunnel-visioned on Han

depending on how good the turret player is (yes, playing turrets requires skill, the dice part only ever shafts the opponent) you will have an incredibly difficult time getting around the range of maneuvers afforded by the idiotic 360 rule

experience/comfort will ultimately dictate when you switch targets, but if you believe Hans going to **** off on one turn and the headhunters are getting close...well you better flip right around and eat the head-hunters. You don't want them picking at your butt with range 1 shots while Han trololos off-screen

Against every big ship minus Dash, obstructions are your friends (unless you're running something unwieldy like a swarm) as they'll limit their hyper mobility.

Against Dash, obstacles are still your friend, just less cripplingly so.

Even though he'll be able to BR/boost off of it if he plops down on one, that's still using 1 of his actions for movement as opposed to offensive/defensive buffing. It may also obstruct his shot. A Dash player doesn't have to fear obstacles, but they still want to avoid them as much as possible.

sadly, that's asteroids only :(

Debris does literally nothing to Dash, and imo you're better off 9/10 times just cornering everything

Tournament? Block the fattie and focus him down ASAP. Otherwise you risk being down on points when time is called.
