what do people use for a straight line?

By willismaximus, in Star Wars: Armada

When doing los or extending arcs, what does everyone use? Using the range ruler can be a pain. I saw a picture of someone using a laser pointer of some kind that projects a line rather than a dot. Anyone know where I can find something like that? I know they make laser levels, but I was hoping I could find one in a smaller, less unwieldy package.

I just use the range ruler.

This plus the Mk. 1 eyeball are usually sufficient. Unlike X-Wing, Armada doesn't require such precision.

I use a line laser, which I bought from Amazon.

and two AA-batteries. Extremely cheap at it works very well. You could either hold it above the table, or just put it on the table in order to easily align the laser with a firing arc.

Army Painter do one and its great - we use it for X-Wing, Imperial Assault and Armada all the time.

Yeah their Target Lock laser looked promising, but is apparently out of stock everywhere do to a manufacturing defect they're addressing.

I got this one:

I just took off the magnetic mounting base, so the thing is more hand-held. It's small, bright, and works wonders. The line is a little thick on some of them, but there is a workaround if you get one with a thicker line--just use the edge of the line, rather than the center.

If you can track down a regular laser pointer and a Lego lightsaber (how appropriate) you might be able to rig something up like this without 3D printing the case:

Looks like the 'saber acts as a cylindrical lens to get the line. Have no idea of the actual quality, but I think I'll try it out when I get home!

I just look, don't need anything else.

You can get cheap lazer levels anywhere. Amazon ebay. They are the best tool for straight line because they cant hit models and bump ships.

Laser levels work well.

I picked up a LOS laser from Broken Egg Games at templecon. it is $25 but is very easily visible in well lit spaces.

This is exactly the one I bought for $5.00

^ That one. The one from Harbor Freight. So cheap I've bought several (one for each game).

Thats perfect. Will probably order one tonight.

I will second (4th?) the Harbor Freight Laser line. $5 is hard to beat. Look for them by the chop saw blades.

What we need is a laser pointer setup on a base that can be used to measure for ranges. It is a real pain to measure through a bunch of squadrons.

one of the players I play against has those ones from Harbor freight put up on blocks at an angle. When things get tight we can set them up to bracket the corner of a ship and move the ship off the board temporarily.

Harbor freight saw cut line laser is perfect, cheap, and versatile. Can easily project a 6+ ft line down onto ships even in bright light

I use this one too. works great and cheap. left mine on the base, you can actually sit it on the table past the target and let the lazer shine back toward the shooter to check arcs. works great. I wonder how I ever did without it.

by the way, it isn't like the picture. it projects a fan shaped sheet, so that you can get a line on the map. it does not project a single dot like the picture above implies.
