TIE Punisher gets a Canon Upgrade

By KineticOperator, in X-Wing

I just want to point out to all the die hard "It's supposed to be called an Interdictor" folks that the only explanation for the name change is that Disney/LFL decided that it should be called the Punisher. The days of Lucas lazily allowing people to call things whatever they wish are over, every toy, image, video, or game released at this point has every part of it examined and brought into line with the official canon.

So we really should drop the silly Interdictor Punisher stuff already. It is and apparently always should have been the Punisher. At any rate, it is the Punisher from here on out.

What? Give in to the corporate owners of copyright materials? I think you underestimate the range and enthusiasm of nerdrage.

We shall redouble our offended-ness!

Galactic Battlegrounds came out in 2001. 14 years of habit isn't going to die overnight.

Oh...I was thinking it really got a cannon upgrade! I had to look again. You got me.

Punish the Punisher punishers!

Ditto. Brilliant pun.

I'm happy to drop it, if only because (a) at this point everyone knows the upcoming mini is called the Punisher, and (b) it takes additional effort.

But the point wasn't (for me, anyway) that I think the mini really should have been called the TIE Interdictor: I actually think TIE Punisher is a better name. It's that the change feels so arbitrary.

I feel your pain.

A long time ago in a childhood far, far away there were chocolate bars called Marathon, sweets called Opal Fruits and cheese and onion crisps came in green (NOT BLUE!!!!!!!) packets.

They were renamed and repackaged by corporations who cared little for the generations of people who had to learn to ask for something different.

And whilst the children of today may never know their original names (unless they search the interwebs), I do.

Cheers

Call me crazy, but interdictor is a small star destroyer with gravity well projectors capable of stopping the jump to hyperspace. Never liked the tie called the interdictor and am happy with the change.

This is what I thought. My first dive into EU ships was EaW, so I saw the Interdictor-class SDs frequently. It wasn't until much later that I saw those crazy TIE variants, and seeing a TIE Interdictor just kinda bothered. me because there was already something with that name.

But, now they've gone and changed it. And that bugs me too. Screw it. I'll call it both.

I'm sticking to Inpunterishdicertor. No confusion there.

TIE Punisher works for me.

TIE Spanker also works (it uses the missile launchers out of HALO).

That sounds so pervy.

Considering that Interdictor already has a long-standing place in the SW universe as an entirely different kind of ship (gravity well generator carriers), it only makes sense that LFL and Disney would take the opportunity that including one in an FFG product offers them and rebrand the thing as a TIE Punisher instead.

While on the topic, I kinda hoped for a scimitar assault bomber.... Maybe wave 9 or 10

It took me a second. Then I got the joke.

Very nice.

Am I the only one who saw this thread's title and read cannon instead of canon?

I entered the thread prepared to fulfill my usual role as pedantic spellchecker.

I saw canon and suspected they meant cannon.

We're not talking about this?:

This is more than likely a case of the interdictor title conflicting with a much more prominent version (e.g. Gravity well generators) that may well be involved in future plans (not necessarily FFG's).

I like the new name and was surprised that anything was actually called an interdictor that was not actually an interdictor (if you get my meaning).

The holy bible says:

"It is the eighth of the capital sins to rename existing starships of the Star Wars universe.

Delinquents shall be punished and burn in hell for all ages to come."

It makes sense IF they are planning on continue to referencing and use the Interdictor name in future projects and don't want to cause confusion. Say, for example, the above role you mentioned in a certain fleet-based capital ship combat game...
