Blue on Blue

By Corver, in Star Wars: Armada

So far we have only played Reb vs Imp. At tournaments of course you can end up with blue on blue.

I actually think without wave 1 it will be pretty interesting for rebels, nipping about trying to get objectives while trying to outmanouver your opponent. Of course imp vs imp will be a slugging match.

Objectives might be the same for both sides.

Has anyone played this ye?

any thoughts or tactics?

At tournaments there is going to be a lot of Blue on Blue, especially with all the Imperial love out there. But the trick is not matter who you fight against manouvering is still going to be the Key.

I mean two VSD's driving straight at each other may seem like the obvious tactic but if you watch how real tank combat, or more appropriately a Naval battle, each vehicle moves in a way to get the flank of their opponent in their strongest firing position. For a VSD you want your front hull zone into your opponent's flank and that is how you should plan your tactics. How do you achieve that? Do you play chicken with your VSD, otherwise known as jousting, or do you use a VSD refused flank with GSD's flying up the other flank?

In naval combat the ships try to keep their nose to the enemy giving them a smaller target to hit and only turn their flank to the enemy when they want to get all their cannons to broadside the enemy. (This is going to be more of a Rebels way of fighting.)

I am going to go back to read the old naval tactics and see if anything pops up but I think that might be a good start. (I use to study them when I played Dystopian Wars and they really do work.)

I think maneuvering may be even more important in a Imp vs Imp match. You line up 2 VSD's across from each other and joust, you're looking at luck being the biggest factor, that and upgrades.

Crits in Armada are naaasssty, and one volley of fire could quite likely cripple even another VSD. A VSD can throw what 8-9+ dice if you want to use up a few shields to do so. vs 3 shields in the front... The first person to shoot has the potential to not only do huge damage, but with the right crit could cripple the other guys VSD.

I played an event this past weekend and will say that if you are playing Rebels. DO NOT JOUST. You may have a horse, even a stick, but you will not last long vs a VSD on average rolls. Now jousting with a sacrificial ship may work (see Velociraptors in jurassic park). as you forfeit a ship to flank with 2 others and try to get the sides and even back down and hammer away.

Rebels at 180 can also just kill the TIEs and run and hide all game making sure never to lose a ship. this depends on the scenario but seems to be a viable tactic.

Rebels on Rebels, as others have said will be won with smart movement and scenario choices.

I got a visual of Tarkin on the bridge with assless chaps, nipple rings, a leather imperial naval officer cap, aviators and a leather whip signing "Fire those turrrrboooo LASERS"

that's normal right?

No. No its not. Its not normal at all. But what happens in other galaxies, stays in other galaxies. Please?

 Why? WHY did you say this?

What has been seen cannot be unseen. My brain hates my eyes right now for reading that post.

Citizens of the Empire, we need to come together and do something about all this blue on blue violence...

Where is HoloNet news when you need it? These scurrilous rumors about Grand Moff Tarkin must be rebutted, and the perpetrators brought to justice!
