How many points can you play on a 3' by 3' board?

By MrkvChain, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi all,

I have recently bought the core set of Armada. I'm playing X-Wing since about two years, and built a 3' by 3' game board for it. It has some space for cards and stuff on either side, but the area for the actual gaming is 3' by 3'. I don't want to get into Armada as deeply as I went into X-Wing, so I'm not gonna buy every expansion. Therefore, my questions are:

How many points can you play on a 3' by 3' area, without it being too much?

Since when wave 2 hits, the standard fleet size will be 400 points on a 3' by 6' area, I figured maybe 250 points will be ok?

I thought on buying besides the core set another Victory Class Star Destroyer and the Imperial Squadron pack for the Imperials, and for the Rebels the Squadron Pack, as well as another CR90 Corvette and a Nebulon B Frigate.

What are your thoughts on that?

I'd say 180-200 max.

I agree. Keep it on the small end.

Ok, thank you. It seems like I'm gonna paint the backside of my board, for a 4' by 3' board .. :-)

I like the 3'x4' board size.

Just remember that the imperial forces have a definite advantage over the Rebels on smaller boards. The game was designed to be balanced on a 3x6 table over 180 points. If it's a mirror match no issues, if it is not then the Rebels get hosed and will be at a disadvantage. (The VSD gains its strength when it can limit the Rebel's movement and the Rebels need that extra space to have a fair chance.)

We played on a 3x3' for the learn to play, and that is exactly what I would recommend on a 3x3' board. There isn't much room to move or play with tactical ideas, you just zoom at and past each other and hope for the best.

Even with just the Core set on a 3'x3' board my brother managed to run his Nebulon B off the board edge, completely unable to turn sharp enough to stay on. It could have been changed with Nav commands and better maneuvering, but it wasn't terrible maneuvering, there simply wasn't enough room to do what he needed. Had he tried to loop the other direction to avoid that board edge, he would've passed his shieldless port side to the front of my Victory II at close range. That would've ended the Nebulon B just as quickly as running off the table.

It is barely doable at 3'x3' for 180pts. We won't be running any games on less than 3'x6' from now on.

I don't believe that this game is balanced at all for 180. Especially on a 3x6. On a 3x6, the Rebels having a definite advantage on the larger table at 180. 300 and 400 can possibly be balanced on a larger table, but we probably won't know until wave 1 hits.

You might want to get the rebels the assault frigate instead of the nebulon b frigate. This should allow the rebels 1 decent ship that can handle going against the vic star dest.

As for the imps, you may want to get the gladiator instead of another vic given your point total limitations.

We ran our first tournament yesterday at 180 pts on 3x3 boards and it went very smoothly. We had set up zones short range from each side edge and short range from the player edge. We used only 4 obstacles and the space station was not allowed.

The scoring system works really well to just as an FYI.

Anything over 180 pts will be to big for 3x3 though.

Thank you for your replys.

What I take from them is that I will paint the backside of my board, for a 4' by 3' board. On that, 230 ~ 250 points should be ok.
