2015: Year of the Large Tokens

By NorseJedi, in X-Wing

There has been lots of chatter about the ships, but what struck me today is the size of the tokens coming out this year. Could it be a subtle counter for all those tough larger base ships?

For example, check out the size of this "Conn..." mine or bomb that is coming with the k-wing. That is a huge bomb or mine token (I'm guessing mine since it is an action).

Furthermore, these cluster mines from the Tie Punisher are probably three small ship bases wide! Try avoiding that being dropped in front of you! A large based ship could hit two at the same time. Any ship caught flanking with a 3-5 move might hit all three. Now that's a bad day!

And finally the Raider's debris tokens appear to be two to three small ship bases wide as well. With the new obstacle rule where everyone gets to bring three obstacles of their own choosing, I sure know what I'm going to bring. Whump!

One looks like a firespray, but I can't quite make out the other two. I was really hoping for a decimator and a falcon debris token (half of one would have been fine and plenty large), but these are some nice additions to the tournament box regardless.

So between new mines, bombs and obstacles (not to mention the new missile and torpedo upgrade cards), I suspect we are seeing a new counter to help destroy tough large base ships.

I think it helps control the hyper mobile ships like AutoFel and phantoms too. Obstacles limit de-cloak and boost/barrel roll options

Look at the space mines on the left side of that image. They're pretty big too. And they probably shoot at you!

Definitely phantoms, that's a good point. I was seeing it as an advantage for my hyper-mobile interceptors, but I could see where that could get tight if you get caught in a corridor.

Those debris clouds look more like blown up GR-75s than anything else

I'm pretty certain that the debris from the Raider isn't going to be legal. At least not for standard play.

Why do you figure that? It's certainly the case that the tournament rules restrict them now, but why don't you think that will change? If some people think those new obstacles might come in handy, it would give them an (extra) incentive to buy the Raider.

Yeah I'm inclined to agree. They are probably going to wait a bit before introducing more obstacles to carefully watch how it affects the competitive scene

"I will make it legal. . ."

In all seriousness though I suspect the raider obstacles will be like using the huge ship itself as an obstacle. usable in causal play but not for tournaments.

Time to get Dash back out lol.

I think the debris tokens from the Raider will be legal as soon as we buy it. I can't see why they wouldn't with the new rules where each player gets to bring three. It is an incentive for me to buy the Raider and adds more strategic element to the game. Yep, they are big but it is a token from an official product. Game on!

It's not going to be legal, just as using the raider itself as an obstacle won't be legal. It's a scenario piece.

Maybe they'll be "wreckage" tokens instead of debris, or maybe they'll be legal for Epic play only, or used in a specific mission. Until we have more news, there's no reason to assume anything about them. My guess is that they're too large to be used as obstacles for standard tournament play.

The new bomb tokens don't look especially large. The conner net looks like it has a smaller footprint than a proximity mine. The cluster mine tokens are each less than twice the diameter of a shield token. You definitely could land a large-base ship on all three at once, but I doubt they're very deadly individually and you could probably manage to avoid at least one unless they're dropped right in your face.
