DWRR's Shipyard

By DWRR, in Star Wars: Armada

Only had a quick scan through the pictures because I'm in a rush, but wow. Absolutely amazing, well done on the good work. I'm just jealous I can't paint like that! I'm going to try painting my own fighters at some point when I get the right paints/have the time, wish they'd end up like yours! And those Assault Frigates... The detail on... Well, everything, is really good! I'm very tempted to get another AF and try to repaint it. Keep up the awesome work man!

Another shot showing slightly different angles, not quite as over exposed as last time.5AF353D6-E7B9-49C5-B17C-462C8749F0ED_zps

Love your ships. But how did you due the bug spatter effect. Not sure what it called but it really adds character to the ships. My plan is to go blue with a blood strip aka marines dress pants.

Keep up this awesome work! its really quite awesome and an inspiration to the rest of us. Thank you for taking the time to photograph and share :)

I also look forward to see what you do with wave 2, specifically the R&V and home1/ISD!

I just wanted to chime in that this thread has been an inspiration to paint my own ships. Thank you for the how-to earlier as well.

I'm learning to paint my ships, and its going great. I love these. I love that your ships have this high contract borderlands-like look to it. From far away, it actually makes it look a bit more realistic.

How did you exactly get that effect, though? Is it just from the nuln oil and highlights?

Also, how important would you say base coating with a spray can is? I live in dorms so it's a bit tough to find a suitable place to use a spray can.

Beautiful, as always! I too will have to steal the mohawk stripe - it's fantastic. I love the random blue panel as well. :)

Thanks for all your kind words chaps. :D

As soon as Wave 2 hits the shelves I'll be painting up some MC80s and MC30s. I was only able to get to 1 Sullust event (had planned 2) and crapped out of that one so I'm awaiting the boat!

As for all the questions regarding technique and how to's I'll be putting together a few guide over the next few weeks so just keep looking back here.

Wow... I'm stunned... very well done !

Loving the bone color on those AF MKII's. What are you using for a base? It's it just good 'ol GW Bleach Bone (Screaming Skull now I think) or something else?

I believe so... I've not looked at the name recently but it was the latest bone coloured paint from GW...

Fist pass at the MC80 finished. Then there was a power cut so I was unable to do some of the little bits and bobs. Obviously I still need to paint the base/stand and then I reckon maybe I'll pick out some panels in blue and possibly a final highlight in white over the hull.

Simply gorgeous DWRR.

Evening chaps, new ships added to the fleet. I still need to spray the bases though (always something left to finish).

Yup... . going to cry myself to sleep tonight. . .

It just takes practice. The more you paint the easier it becomes and the better you become.

Use primers, thin your basecoats and use inks / drybrushing for details. Above all neatness is the key.

Taking a page from Barbra Streisand, 'Hello, Gorgeous.' That Mc30's great looking, asymmetrical stripes, great tone, inspiring and intimidating. That Scrugg, scurg... the H6 looks terrific and I'm still impressed by those transitions. I say it a lot, but it hasn't become any less true. Nice interplay between the bright white bombers, medium coloured fighters, and the really dark support ship in the HWK. It's all delightfully connected and still unique.

Well done again, mate. Well done :)

Thanks Vykes, I was trying to paint the Scrugg as a 'rebel' ship, so white/ivory and red bits - so it looks less rogue-like... :P The Crow will be used as the Crow so had to be vaguely accurate... :D

I'm undecided if the MC30 needs some battle damage to tie it in with the AF2s... I will ponder this.

I'm going to need to hit the Falcon with a matt varnish as the inks have dried very shiny. I've also sharpened some of the Mouldy Crow's highlights.

Nice. I painted my falcon up exactly the same - it is a boring paint job, but it seems weird to me to see a colourful falcon. Your MC80 is so different to mine! I finished it this week, and haven't posted a photo yet, but I wanted to make it look like someone had thrown up on a pizza, to highlight modularity and shoddy supply lines. Yours is really nice and clean.

I agree on the falcon! If you google any image of it it just looks grey... you have to squint hard to see any of the yellow or blue panels. No doubt on my X-WingTMG Falcon I'll paint the colour but I just felt it was too much hassle at this scale.

I like the sound of your take on the MC80, looking forward to the pics. My take was that they were fresh out of being refitted and have just arrived with the rebel fleet. So my existing ships are beaten up and these match tonally but are not battered and bruised like the AF2s.

Firstly just wow, your painting is insane! Secondly, could i be cheeky and ask to see the rears of your Imperial ships and ask for your method on doing a good engine glow? It's an area I'm really struggling with. Also I believe you are UK based(?) if so could you recommend a good paint stripper so i can bring the models to base plastic when i want to repaint them.

Cheers!
