DWRR's Shipyard

By DWRR, in Star Wars: Armada

Veeery very nice DWRR. I still can't get the hang of the near-white Star Destroyer (the Pegasus started out as that sort of a thing... um, sure didn't end up that way), but I'm liking the new stuff. The Y-wing engine glow in particular gets me, but the Victory's squadron stripes really are looking terrific. And once again, I commend that Assault Frigate, it has some excellent subtle tones and crisp highlighting.

Hmm, I'm liking Tycho's A-wing, but what shades of green is that, might I ask? I just can't get green to work in Armada (odd as I can in other games, maybe because I don't want to highlight to organic yellow).

Your stuff is fabulous!

Besides of the VSD, I especially like the x-wings and the imperial fighters. What colours did you use on them?

Keep up the good work!

Vykes and Derbo I'll get back to you both with the colours I used, can't remember them off the top of my head.

Meanwhile...

I doubt I'd ever need three VSD's but fancied painting something tonight and had the 3rd ship primed. I wanted to do something different, a kind of dazzle camo that you'd fine on WWI ships. I'm undecided if it actually looks like Dazzle instead more like a weird heraldry pattern. Either way I still reckon it looks good as part of the VSD squadron. Ultimately I think I chose 2 greys to close in tone and the third not dark enough...

After the Nuln Oil and some more direct black shading and defining. The problem with the two greys too close on tone is evident here as after the wash even I couldn't remember or see the patterns I'd base coated...

A Dazzle pattern Victory-class Star Destroyer.... glorious. Absolutely glorious....

...are.... sorry, I lack appropriate english words, in germany I would say "oberaffengeil"! :)

The squadron looks totally freaking awesome... Am I right that the most time consuming part is doing all the edges? With a brush?? That neat??? What are you, a cyborg? Sorry, just being jealous.

Great work, man!

Many thanks SirWillibald!

Ive stared the wear and tear on my bigger rebel ships. The Neb and Corvette are too small to do this kind of work on so hits the big ships. It's also a great way to differentiate the Rebs from the Imps, like the cards in the Decipher CCG... ☺

Second AFII has now been finished and weathered.

The base colour was Caliban Green from Citadel and I added Ogryn Camo in progressive layers to highlight.

I'm glad I saw this because I was considering using something like bonewhite as a base for my Nebs but I might go with gray. The rebel color seems tricky to replicate - like light gray with a tad of ochre.

Having experimented with my second AFII I think the rebel ivory colour can be used but shade it with greys and blues instead of browns. I think you keep the grey spaceship feel without looking too cartoony, but with different colours.

Fantastic work!!!

I'm surprised that the blend between the naturally warm palette and the cool shadows worked so well without making it feel like a bio-ship. The grey I suspected might work as it looks semi-washed out and desaturated, but I'm surprised the blue went over that well. The bow of the ivory looks like it might be made out of concrete or a ceramic (It's a really cool effect). Was the pitting done via strippling? Oh, and my compliments on the blending of the tail on that ivory RAF, very very smooth. Bloody great work :)

. . . I am going to cry myself to sleep now. . .

Was the pitting done via strippling?

Completely missed this one apologies. I just used the tried and trusted 'torn foam' dipped in paint and then stippled on.

Started work I my third assault frigate.

I'm going to make a final pass over all three to tighten up some finer details.

Looks great, interested to see your approach to the MC80.

I'm dreading the MC80... The sheer number of panel lines...

Quick question, does the edge highlighting not throw off the scale for anyone else? It makes them seem much, smaller than they are at scale.

Don't get me wrong, the color selection and actual technique are almost flawless. It just (to me anyway) makes them seem much smaller.

For me - I think the panel lining works well for the AFII - as there are fewer and larger panels, but on the Victory and MC80, there are far too many and smaller panels, I think it can look too bitty and broken up. Just a personal opinion, DWRR is an awesome painter (Vykes too) and I'm learning from his work.

I think the biggest problem will be mixing ship scales. So the MC80 will look different when lie highlighted next to the big panels of the AF2.

I love DWRR's paneling work, it's fantastic brush control not to mention both stylistic and vibrant on the tabletop. I've got to agree with both Blazer and DWRR, the panel lining looks great with the fewer, larger panels but the actual ship scale and shipyard type means that the MC80's seem daunting (not to mention that dragon scale-like prow of the ISD... ugh. I'm dreading it). But I am seriously looking forward to any work DWRR does on the MC80. (heyas mate, weird switching pronouns aint' it? :P )

Back to the latest RAF, love it. Big red stripe, lot of weathering, that's a good look for the solid but not overly plain thanks to the terrific weathering. But blast it DWRR! I have a naked RAF waiting for some sort of squadron marking and I was going to do -exactly- that. Now I might have to go for some 'Jenny wren' red belly pattern to not look derivative. Curses, foiled again! :P

@Vykes, Many thanks for the kind words! I wouldn't worry about copying the Mohawk stripe, I, in turn borrowed the idea from a fleet I saw a couple of weekends ago. I did say to the chap at the time that I loved the look and would be stealing it... :P

I'm finding the more AF's I paint the more weathered and battle damaged they get... I have really fallen in love with the look of this ship, I know so many hate it but there is something about it that I think looks right. I know, I know... I'm some sort of perverse heretic... :D

I'll maybe add one more to the fleet... for completeness, although I've no idea what base colour I'd use on number four.

I've not even begun to think about how I'm going to fit the MC80 colour scheme into the rest of my fleet...

Another shot showing slightly different angles, not quite as over exposed as last time.

This is outstanding work. Beautifully painted and in total keeping with the Rebellion look and feel.

Nothing short of THE BEST repaints I have come across.
