Questions about Purge the Unclean

By Fizgot, in Dark Heresy

1) which one of these is the action situation and which one is the horror?

I initially assumed that shades on twilight was going to be the horror. I mean it's even set on a space hulk. But it does have a lot of action (even thou against horrifying enemies like dark eldar).

Barron hopes, from a quick skim through, seems a action horror setting too, though it talks about horror pacing in the sidebar. Is this one supposed to be the horror?

Or is the prospect of going undercover the true horror to socially inept shut ins with no sense of subtlety? That the joyous choir would require leaving your plate armor and heavy stubber in the van might be the most terrifying prospect of all. Though yes, I think I know this one is supposed to be the 'intrigue' mission.

2) What links do each of the missions have to 'Illumination'? Though I modified (one might say butchered) the starting campain 'illumination' I did leave a lot of the plot links intact (hey, Severus is still alive and I've used him as a dues ex machina and rescuer several times since he's joined the inquisitor's band.)

I know that Rejoice for you are True links in with the fake tarrot's xenos tech, but is there more?

I figured that Rejoice for you are true is the Intrigue adventure, Shades on Twilight the horror adventure and Baron Hopes the action adventure.

That said, Twilight could be seen as ghost horror with action, and Hopes as action horror with zombies. So both are in a sense horror themed.

1) Action: Shades of Twilight. The Acolytes are requested there to kick some serious butt on a space hulk.

Horror (well, kinda): Baron Hopes. This one is intended to be some horror-survival, with a lot of (futile) zombie-bashing. There is some thread of the forums, discussing the improvement possibilities of the whole trilogy. I strongly suggest you read it first, before running it - it has a lot of nice and easy-to-implement ideas.

2) Actually, all three scenarios are forced to be linked together. They don't stick together naturally to my view, however. The main glue is some evil Purple Hand-like secretive heretic organization called Serrated Query, that does a lot of nasty things the Acolytes have to deal with.

As for the Illumination link, this one seems too, a bit too artificial. Nothing specific, only that the Xenos technology used in Aristarchus' Tarot card matches some device used in the first scenario of the trilogy. Apart from this, no other link.

Hope that helps.

1. Baron is considered horror rather than action since it is more focused on investigation and creeping horror events, while SoT is focused on the action part with lots of encounters and no investigation at all. RfYAT is investigation with a socializing and few and short action sequences (we spent very little time on combat playing it).

2. There is a slight link to the heretech from Illumination in baron Hopes as well, but nothing in SoT. Ignore it if you want. I kept it as a sense of conspiracy and to keep the players guessing.

<PtU spoilers>

The subtext I got was that the Serrated Query supplied the Tarot card in Illumination. That's not spelled out, but that's how I ran it.

I saw Twilight as the action adventure. I wish I had the Space Hulk tiles then. The new Space Hulk has 1 1/8" squares on the tiles, but so what? They look great.

Baron Hopes was supposed to be a zombie-fest horror game. I changed it to be a showdown with the Serrated Query for my own reasons, but you can make it a big fat zombie fight.

If you stick with Baron Hopes as written, you'll have some inconsistencies to worry about. Such as if the book is taken away from the players by the Dark Eldar in Twlight, it shows up with the mutants in Barron Hopes. But the mutants broke off from the Serrated Query two years ago, so why did the SQ Fed-Ex them the book?

Off topic: One problem I have with these forums is how hard they are to search. A lot of us just repeat what we said a few months ago, because we know you won't be able to find it. :(
