Regionals Start Next Weekend: Where is the Meta?

By TasteTheRainbow, in X-Wing

Locally, we've seen a huge drop-off in the turret +1 builds. Two-ship lists nearly always have a firespray. In general though I would say that the meta here is complete chaos.

What has everybody seen locally? What do you expect to see at Regionals?

We have had sudden influx of Scum, with lots of dual IG-2000 lists. IG-88 is cropping up now and again along with a firespray though!

I'd still say the mainstay of my local meta is turret +1 or turret +4; with the Decimator still being a popular choice (despite it getting the dren kicked out of it consistantly!)

We just recorded the next NOVA episode last night, and Neil did a great job at pouring through some data so we could look over the prevalent lists. Hopefully it will release on Tuesday!

My local scene is no where near the meta. So, I have no idea! I'm trying to think of Regionals.

I've got a Tie Bomber list that is great against big ships and/or B-wings, but it's terrible against high agility ships. I've not tried it against IG-88 yet.

I've got a Decimator w/ Defender list, but it doesn't do well vs. lots of B-wings.

I'm thinking of running 5 Alpha Interceptors, but haven't tried it yet.

UGH....no idea what to try. Guess I better wait until Tuesday...

Can you give us the abstract?

Locally I seem to be the only one playing Brobots with any regularity, but the "one big turret plus stuff" is still fairly common, whether it is Dash + whatever or Han + whatever. I don't see a lot of Decimator locally for some reason, but it's too good to not assume you'll see it on the table at regionals. Scum has been big: lots of Firesprays and Z's and Y's, with a non-zero number of people dabbling with the StarViper.

Other than probably a reduced number of Phantom lists and having to account for the impact of Scum, I don't think things have shifted all that much.

Tier 1 (proven lists that win tournaments)
- 4BZ (note that this archetype family could also include the other flavors of 4B, such as 4x Blues+AdvS, 4x Blues+AccuracyCorrector, 4x Blues+IonC, 4x Blues+FCS+???; it's probably just a matter of how you want to spend those extra 12 points)
- Fat Han + Support (Zs; Autothruster Prototypes)
- Soontir + Chirpy
- Note: ATC Vader immediately becomes Tier 1 when Imperial Raider is released
Tier 1.5
- Brobots (many varieties)
- Panic Attack (although this may not be all that different from 4BZ, esp. with BTL-A4)
Tier 2 (proven lists that tend to make Top 8 and have a shot)
- Corran + Turret (Dash with HLC or Mangler; Chewie with Lando, EI, etc)
- Soontir/Whisper + Mini-Swarm
- TIE Swarm
- Whisper + Chirpy
Tier 3 (on the radar, but not there quite yet)
- Rebel Warthogs, Scum Warthogs
- Random 4 Rebel / 5 Scum
- Elite Squints
- Scum Firespray (Super Kath, Mad Bomber) + Support (Zs, Sycks, Warthogs)
- Scum 7Z + Feedback Array
- IG88B + Boba Fett (see Sable Gryphon's squad)
- 3x Phantom - Aaron's 6-Sigma (will anyone be crazy enough to fly this?)

Very concise.

I would say that's a pretty accurate assessment of things.

No IG-88B and Boba Fett on the list? That's something I tend to see on the forums.

Thanks, we actually talked about it but it wasn't in the original notes. Updating now. :)

TIE Swarm beats everything in that tier 1, but I think it struggles against the rest of the lists.

Regionals Start Next Weekend: Where is the Meta?

Oh, that's an easy question to answer. I keep it right here in my pocket.

It might beat them, but does it beat them in 60-75 minutes...?

Is that a list of all the meta dominating X-Wing squad archetypes in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

great job as usual with the data :P

Still, sad to see fatties are still more prevalent than they ought to be (re: not at all) and that tier 1 is basically Wave 5: redux :(

I'm glad B-wings managed to sneak in a spot during the last wave and have managed to hold onto it, at least

Oddly, no one is flying 4BZ (in any variation) in Southern New England.

The rest of MJs list is spot on for our meta though.

Is sample size good enough to say RAC+Soontir > RAC+Whisper?

RAC+Soontir is kind of a new thing since autothrusters and the phantom nerf hit the scene. My impression is that is hasn't seen much tournament action yet, although it's won a few high profile events (in two cases run by high profile players).

EDIT: I was just browsing through the SC results on List Juggler and I don't understand why RAC+Whisper is Tier Two. Decimator+phantom took first at tons of tournaments this season. It clearly falls under the category "proven lists that win tournaments"! Han + Deciphantom + 4-5R are clearly the dominant builds from simply looking at all first place results.

Same here in Oklahoma. I've never seen it played : /

Yes, and now that the Phantom usage has dropped, you may see more of them. Unfortunately the TIE Swarm does horrible in the MoV department compared to the Fat Ships lists, both in regards to overall MoV and victory conditions on timed matches.

This list here is based on the post-Phantom nerf. Most of the data in List Juggler is from before the nerf.

RAC + Fel may not be much better than RAC + Whisper, but at the moment it is more prevalent. I personally think that the Phantom players have run away from Whisper for now, but the pendulum will swing back the other way somewhat once they realize that it is still a solid ship as long as it wins the PS war.

The slightly rising popularity of bombs probably also encourages people to shy away from the TIE swarm. I used to see 1 bomb every 4-5 tournaments. Now I usually play against one of each type at every tournament.

So.....I looked through what's been submitted via List Juggler. I'm particularly looking at what's been submitted since the beginning of the month. I am seeing a lot more Rebel lists than anything else. A lot of B-wings there. Not as many Fat Hans. A good amount of Scum, too. For your information, what time period are you compiling things from? It seems that you shouldn't count anything before Wave 6 hit the shelves. Also, I wonder about things since the Phantom Menace (as in a menace towards the Phantom....a nerf!) hit the official tournament results. Are the results really the same or those outside of these results considered "current meta"?

Neil has been compiling the list from a combination of more local meta in the NOVA stronghold area, as well as some sampling from List Juggler.

So...

Looks! Over there!

// pins blame on Neil.

Seriously though, it's a great start at quantifying what's out there. Of course your mileage may vary. Eventually I'll see about getting better stats tracking in List Juggler. Its low on the priority list at the moment though.

Is the FFG tourney software out yet?

Negative, although rumor has it that it may be out and enforced for the Regionals season. There has been no open beta yet.
