However it happened, it was certainly found--because it (meaning both the lightsaber and the hand) ended up as one of the curiosities contained in the Emperor's secret, personal storehouse at Mount Tantiss.

i thought that the saber handed over in the force awakens trailer was the saber Luke lost in Bespin. it appears to be handed to Leia, but thats just my speculation.

Supposedly it is, though my roommate thinks it looks more like vader's than anakin/Luke's. Supposedly they look very similar. I don't pay much attention to those kinds of details.

The hand passing the lightsaber off is really weird looking. Its almost alien looking. Its a lot smaller than the hand receiving the saber.

It's a little orange alien. You can see the alien face for a brief moment in the trailer.

Maybe it was built to look similar, and is in no other way related?

possible but seems unlikely to tease us with it only to have it be a "replica" so to speak. That'd almost be like if the blue and white astromech in the trailer was just another droid built to look like R2.

You mean like the one we got at the end of the first movie after the original was blown up by Vader on the trench run?

Looks to be the same saber Luke lost on Bespin. Its also worth noting that Anakin created his second(Sith) lightsaber to look almost identical to the one he lost in the fight with Obi-wan.

Aren't Jedi somewhat connected to their saber through the Force due to part of the construction process?

It wouldn't be too much of an issue for Luke to reach out with the Force as he is leaving the Emperor's Throne Room, find his saber through the Force, and use the Force to bring it to himself as he's helping his dad escape.
