I need to be convinced not to get 3 K-Wings

By Tsiegtiez, in X-Wing

Just what it says on the tin. I was down for one, maybe two when they first revealed Wave VII, but now with the preview article and the unhealthy amount of discussion on the forums, I'm pretty sure I desperately need three of the SLAMtastic bombers.

Imagine, if you will, a friendly 100 point match in which your opponent sets down three K-Wings. Two of them are PS2 (approx 20-23 points) equipped with

—Advanced SLAM

—Bombardier

—Proximity Mines

—Cluster Mines

—Extra Munitions

and about 32-35 points apiece. They SLAM up the sides of the board and Advanced SLAM to drop ALL THE MINES. The last however many points are on a lightly-built Miranda Doni who skirts the field waiting for an opportune shot and SLAMming or regenerating as needed.

What do you do, oh friendly forumite? What can you do?

Please somebody talk me out of how great this is going to be.

...why should I talk you out of it, exactly?

I will say that spam lists are seldom as good as lists that can employ multiple approaches and tactics, so a heavily loaded K-wing or two might be better off escorted by a straight-up fighter than by another K-wing. And I'll also say that bombs are good, but they're at their best when they're taking a shortcut past the Agility of a hard target. Against something like BBBBZ they're considerably less effective, because you're liable to be torn apart by a ship that can afford to shrug off Proximity Mines as the price of doing business.

But if you want three K-wings, and you don't have to raid the baby-formula budget or something to get them, I'd say go for it.

Sounds fun. You might need four of them though.
Or five.

How often do you play Epic? ;)

OK, don't get 3.

The generics will almost certainly cost less than 25 points, so get 4! :D

* If 4 K-wings don't turn out to be competitive, don't worry, as Banana points out, there is always Epic play. :)

You need 2, or 4.

In all things, symmetry.

At one point I'd of gotten 4 of them... But now I'm thinking 2.

As Vorpal points out, a list of 3-4 of them most likely will have issues performing really well. But 2 of them with B-Wings or X-Wings as escorts, or a Y-Wing could be a fairly effective list.

Plus that, at $20 per, I just can't see spending $80 on 4 ships when I doubt i'll ever use more than 2.

Something like this maybe?

Crap. You might be onto something there.

Also this is the last time I go to the forum for help. This is a legitimate problem!

What's worse, is that half of you have me seriously considering a fourth at this point! KKKKZ is the new meta, calling it now.

if you make a list of 3 K wings, and then list them out like people do here (BBYYZ for example) we are going to have problems

That said, I personally want a squadron of three of them for epic. Still waiting on a big board game with like 5 people per side.

Oh don't worry, I can skirt the issue by calling it a Triple-K list. Also, please don't take any offense if I start bragging about the inherent superiority of a 3-K list, or how it might be just naturally better than other types of minority lists, as it's all in good fun.

Do you get any sort of discount if you order $X or more? Do you buy online or at a LGS?

Because unless you're buying from say MM or CSI, and need a 3rd one to push you over the $100 for free shipping, I'd suggest you get 2 and see what you think of them before getting a 3rd.

Alot of it also depends on just how much $20 is to you. If you think of $20 as lunch money then go for it, if you think of $20 as food for a week, then no. :)

So, now, it's a matter of what I actually need in a competitive sense, versus what I want, which is a perpetual state of "mistakes were made."

What the enemy can do is bring Wes Janson and shut down your bombers.

Wes Janson does nothing against Bombs...

Except avoids them. I'd be more concerned with missiles than bombs. My preferred Opportunist list will be making a comeback if the bomber/ordnance carrier makes a comeback. Which is fine by me.

Nah we EPIC'ers all need six... SIX I say!

Dat way we get three twos, or two threes, or six ones out of 'em.

;)

Do it. It's your money and your list.

Might have to dust off Opportunist with all these Action taking bomb droppers coming. I look forward to blowing the Krack-wings into dust.

It's definitely going to be satisfying to move, SLAM, AdvSLAM a prox mine right under all these Opportunistic aces that will be coming my way :D looking forward to Bombardier in that regard!

talk you out of it?

hell no I say get 12 of everything for epic!

I just need a little clarification: Are you dropping all your mines at once (which you can't do) or are you talking about moving, slamming, dropping a mine, moving, slamming, dropping another mine, while I fly around all of your wonderfully placed mines?

This is all of course assuming you took Advanced slam or whatever the heck the space jam is called.

Just don't buy any epic ships. If you do you will buy 3+ K-wings for sure.

From my understanding, you cannot drop a mine before a SLAM maneuver. so you can still only drop one mine per turn.

You have to reveal a dial to drop a bomb, a SLAM isn't revealing a dial, it's performing a maneuver.

Plus there's this line from the FAQ page 3 under Bombs...

A ship may only drop one bomb per round.
