Help re-positioning the Falcon's dish

By Conandoodle, in X-Wing

Good morning,

I cracked open my brand new Falcon, after a long wait, today with delight. It's beautiful. A little lighter than I expected but a great model ... except the dish on top points inward. I know it sounds strange but my Falcon looks cross-eyed.

I gave it a gentle twist but it didn't budge. Does anyone have any experience re-positioning / removing it? If so, how do I go about it? I'd like to re-position it facing forward or a little outward.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds simple enough but just to be sure, could you post a picture here first so we can see the problem?

I know it is not much .. but to me it looks a little DERPy.

it's supposed to face that way

Yes it's supposed to be like that but if you still want to reposition it, you can either use a saw (preferably a razor saw) or a very sharp knife to cut it loose. The stands the dish rests on can be described as the letter A when looked at from the side. Be sure not loose the small plastic blocks that rest between the 'legs' of the A as that's what keeps the dish in position. In fact just put a dab of super glue on the outside of each stand so the block is firmly locked in place before you make any cuts.

Really!? I don't know why but it bothers me so much.

That's good advice. Before cutting I might try putting some nail polish remover on it to see if it weakens the glue enough to twist it. Will post results.

My third Falcon came like that and I'm going to cut it apart to replace the dish anyway. I'll play with it tonight and let you know what I find but I think the absolute fastest way is to cut the vertical stand holding the dish right off the round base. Scrap off the paint from the round base, glue the stand back on, then brush on some paint to cover it up.

I removed a dish before with a saw blade.. then noticed it was attached with 2 tabs into the hull. That raised round area the dish sits on should be easy to remove.. or cut off..

As was said it is supposed to be turned inward slightly like that, and the tabs and slots in the hull make sure it is at the right angle.. but if you wanna move it.. that's up to you.

Could magnetize it too so it can spin.

It seems cutting is the way to go.

We just moved and my wife has yet to purchase more nail polish remover to attempt to soften the glue.

I considered this. My hobby gear is currently in a box being shipped to Australia.

This is good to know. I thought it would just be a peg that inserts in to the hole on the Falcon's surface.

I really want to remove it without chopping the model up though. Might just have to learn to like it as it is. I can't get past the cross-eyed look though.

The front left spar of one of my Falcons is missing the detail bit (a headlight?) and has a big hole in it if that's any consolation.

Maybe that was FFG's way of saying you need to put some LED lights in the Falcon?

I'll paint glowing lights on it, the Falcon's kinda small for a first-time LED project. I wanted to LED some Warhammer stuff but I barely have time to paint let alone perform electrical surgery.

I'll probably fix it with some antenna or an extra tank bit or something. The nice thing about the YT1300 and 2400 is that you can fix almost every flaw/problem just by making it look a little bit custom with some plastic bits glued on. Don't like your comm dish? Cut it off and reglue it some other way.

I just sold ALL of my 40k stuff too. I was half hoping I'd kept a sensor dish off a tank to attach to the top (EpVII style). It's OK. I'm sure I will become used to it.

Thanks for everyone's assistance though. It is very appreciated.

Mel's Shapeways store sells an EpVII dish; I presume you just snap the old one out and snap the new one in.

Step 1: Fly into the second Death star...

Step 2: Knock of the dish while avoiding incomming fire.

Step 3: Buy a new dish.

Step 4: Now mount the new dish anywhere you like.
