So...Jedi *can* get married

By whafrog, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

A 7 year old kid was upset when he found out that Jedi can't get married, so he wrote to Lucas, and got a response:

Cute kid :)

How sweet XD

So mainly he's saying that those values that a Jedi seeks are also in marriage so, it is allowed but without obsession. I miss something?

One might even say, that a Jedi is encouraged to love.

Sweet! :) How do you know he is 7? Couldn`t see his age anywhere.

I guess the New Jedi Order isn`t canon still then?..

It is very difficult to love selflessly. Better to love as many people as possible as often as possible and just embrace the dark side.

That's adorable. Makes me wish I was seven again.

And no, the New Jedi Order isn't canon any longer.

Makes we wanna grab one of my nephews and have em write a cute letter so I can get a bag of cool free stuff..... ;)

So Jedi can't form attachments and are not suppose to marry (this letter not withstanding) so does that mean that the order encourages one-night stands? That's as much a relationship without attachment as you can get. . .

Yes Desslok, i think that's a valid interpretation....but Yoda would probably judge it a selfcentered action and deem it inappropriate for a Jedi

What a charming video! And a lovely gesture from George Lucas.

Sorry, found the link at theforce.net, which is where I saw the age.

Well, it'll have to be vetted by the Story Team before it becomes official canon. ;)

This is amusingly true.. George Lucas can say anything he wants and that doesn't make it canon anymore. He no longer owns the franchise. Not to mention, many canon sources do make it painfully clear that Jedi can not marry and remain in the order. Heck, they weren't even allowed to consider their old family to still be family anymore.

However, given some of what has been seen in Rebels there's a chance than any future Jedi order may allow these connections, much like the New Jedi Order in the EU/Legends materials. For one it does seem that Kanan and Hera are a couple if not married, as an example.

The only canon sources I know of even discussing the issue are Attack of the Clones and maybe Revenge of the Sith. Yea h Anakin keeps the marriage secert but we don't know if that's because he can't get married or because he was supposed to get permission first, and remember he wasn't even a full Knight when he got married. Perhaps Jedi are supposed to be at least Knights before seeking permission to marry or its much harder for a Padawan to get that permission then for a Knight who has proven himself or herself.

Even in Legends there were some PT era Jedi allowed to marry though that was usually a case of the population of their species being so low that it was felt a fertile member not breeding would endanger the species.

Well since canon is basically just the movies, clone wars and rebels it seems things could be anything. However if we are talking Star Wars Lore then waaaaaaaay before the prequels were ever going to be a thing (and they all had very different original concepts a scripts) marriage was not really an issue. Jedi did it all the time leading to the Family and Heritage Lines in which the Force pooled strongly (Sunriders, Horns etc). In fact before what we see in Episode II the Emotional attitude of the Jedi was a different thing entirely, being Afraid wasn't an issue it was Giving Into fear that was the problem. Emotional Attachment was also not considered a "problem" unless the Jedi later reacted with deeds of Aggression, Jealously and Hatred. Much of what is now considered part of the Jedi Code/Way is because of the "Sith Code" being put out, something of a source of frustration whenever I see it, because it was written as a bold opposite to the Jedi Code. The Original Sith material has no such "Code" (that's why fallen Jedi were Dark Jedi and NOT Sith).

Hurrah, George Lucas

You forgot the 4 new books and all the disney/marvel comics are canon as well.

A New Dawn

Tarkin

Heir to the Jedi

Lord of the Sith

All are canon. =) Which is odd because Heir to the Jedi slightly contradicts canon about Luke but apparently they don't care already about a bit of "drift"

What does it contradict?
