Need help with a friend

By Corellian Corvette, in X-Wing

So, I am kinda bored with the standard 100 point deathmatch, and want to play 150 point games on a 4x4 with 9 asteroids instead of 6.

He however, states that the game "recommends that each faction field 100 points" and typically doesn't like deviating.

I want to move up to 150 points because it opens up more breathing space for being able to be a "wing commander".

Also, their doesn't seem to be any real meta, expect that 12 TIE fighters might reign supreme.

I would be willing to do 120 and 125 points as well, but right now I just want to field a flight of 6 X-wings, with maybe a few low skill unique pilots in there.

He said that he would be willing to try a 150 point game, he just needs to hear a good argument for it.

What should I say?

He typically flies Echo and Whisper, or a phantom+interceptor+shuttle list, and the last game we played, my X-wings killed the phantoms early on. (but that was months ago, before wave 6 was announced)

More points means more ships and/or more upgrades. It also opens room to make munitions a bit more effective.

I've played a few 150 point games, they last a little longer but allow you to play with a lot more ships so I'd guess More Ships = More Fun.

Not a fan, but it is a supported amount of the final round of escalation.

Its so much more fun at 125 points.

at 150 you HAVE to be careful: 1. you need much more space. 2. you may find that British colonnial forward line march becomes the best tactic. 3. deathballing occurs where ships get sniped out of the sky.

Firepower concentration becomes very very powerful at 150. Its marginal at 125, still survivable.

You may require Assault missiles or bombs to deal with mass deathballing.

AOE damage is the way to go.

oh and the best argument is to ask him to simply try a 125 pt game. give it a go.

Take a larger table": I use a 4x3. Its much cooler also as you get more time to think about your engagement angle!

with more ships, you might find you dont need extra rocks. I'd save the extra rocks for slightly larger space.

Ah, cool.

I like using the rocks to divide the board into "lanes" and then crash through said lanes in complicated maneuvers.

And I know about the deathballing problem, which is something I have learned now to AVOID at all cost, after a humbling experience at a local club involving Assault missiles and Ion torpedoes.

Bank off at angles and then do a K-turn back into the fray, you take more damage, but you clump your foes if he decided to K turn when you do the Bank to get out.

For me, the game really starts to get rolling as the points go up. It's not just the points, exactly, it's that each fighter tends to have a role in the game that is a bit more focused than "blow stuff up".

In fact: a 300 point epic match is the "real game" in my mind. Everything else is kind of practice.

I prefer the 150s, since they let me mess around with more at once. Maybe try breaking him out of the 100-point-deathmatch with a few missions first?

I have always wanted to do the corvette campaign...

Try introducing him to epic. Just as recommended and lots of points per side. And huge thematic battles.

best argument i can find is why not!!

Alright, I got him to agree. Something to look forward too this weekend :)

Good to hear!

Also maybe try some missions? I got a few handy =)

Play escalation.

Start with 60 points then go to 150 and finish with an epic match.

I can understand why someone would not want to play more than 100 points. IT does crowd the play area more often so arc dodgers have lees of a chance to survive and moderately robust ships like a B-wing can still be focused down in the first round of shooting. So 100 has that balance where there is enough action but not overwhelming amounts of it to throw off the balance.

Still I think Escalation is the best format to get competitive players out of standard lock mode. After all there is a rule set for it and you can use that for competitive play styles.

150 points is where you can see the dreaded "All the Iggy" squads. :D

Sure they won't have much of anything in the way of upgrades on them, but the look on his face when he sees four Aggressors coming at him will be worth it. Some of the best games I've had have been at large point sizes.

Punish him for showing bad manners!

Go nuts like these guys.

Well if he doesn't want to...

I play 100 points mostly because it's the tournament standard and i want to learn the 100 point meta and practice a bit there, but honestly if someone would ask me for a 150 point game i would still accept. Why the hell not really?

i really don't get why he needs special arguments for this... Just to try it? Just to see what kind of squad would do well there?

This. It's a gradual increase and there is an official ruleset for it. Perfect!

wonder if somebody has a random point generator and or random ship generator to make things really interesting.. say a random point total between 50 and 100 or 50-150.. and then a random ship or ships to play.

I have always wanted to do the corvette campaign...

I've played that as the Rebels. It was fun, though the Imperial player has an edge for the second half of the campaign, it felt like.

I used to play 150 but scaled down to 100, one friend was dead set on using named pilots and it didn't work I was taking a mix always outnumbering him and never losing, going to 100 helped him build more focused lists.

You can even limit it to only ships you have

150 pts in escalation is played on a 3x3 field with 6 obstacles and thats what we play with most of the time! There is no need for a bigger area or more obstacles until you do EPIC! Epic is AWESOME!
