IG-88D and Adv Sensors vs FCS, am I losing out dropping Adv Sen?

By PlayerNine, in X-Wing

So I am running IG-88D alongside Boba Fett. IG presently has Lone Wolf, Adv Sensors, HLC and Autothrusters on him. I recently changed over from Mangler Cannon to HLC.

Advanced Sensors has always been a key part of mobility or maintain damage, allowing a focus or boost before pulling a red.

However, with the reliance of focus defensively, I find myself very rarely using TL unless there are no shots either direction.

With that in mind, I am pondering the use of FCS over adv sensors in order to try and get a TL and Focus on key turns, but I feel that really hurts my mobility or my action economy. Secondly it makes me wonder if IG-88B wouldn't be a better choice. My policy is generally to hit hard enough the first time that a second shot doesn't come up. In a 6 round tourney that I won, IG-88b only fired off that second shot maybe once or twice the entire day.

With HLC, I'm rolling even more dice, though with FCS, they are more likely to be unmodified so maybe B will fire off more, IG-88B rubs me the wrong way personally. I tend to play a very positional game and let Fett do the heavy lifting while Iggy spends the game living forever.

What are your thoughts on IG B vs D and Adv Sensors vs FCS with HLC?

I think C is a bit better than D if you insist on not using B.

FCS is a good choice. Compared to advanced sensors, you just need to give yourself more room while planning. Keep distance, hammer things from afar, repeatedly hit the same target. It takes a couple turns to get going, but you will be putting the hurt on and getting a better chance of lining up a TL+focus shot than adv sensors.

I'd much rather use Predator than Lone Wolf, honestly. That of course negates FCS, because of the rereroll rule, and frees up your slot for AdvS

I like lone wolf for the living forever bit, helps to have a focus though. Not 100% sold on lone wolf and I do like predator, but when rolling 3-4 green dice with a focus in hand, rerolling a blank is super nice. I do have a problem with C, and that involved the stages of a game were I am boosting vs not boosting. When I would want that evade the most, focus was likely better anyway or I am in battle trying to drop a ship. And if I am boosting to arc dodge, and do so correctly, I don't need the evade anyway. I swore by C for a while but over time I warmed up to the movement freedom of D.

That glitterstim one day though....

Adv Sensors is a necessity on D because you want to actually use his ability, and Adv Sensors limits the cost of K-turns. Less so on C.

I actually found Push the Limit incredibly strong with the Sensors, since there's so much green on the dial. I spent a lot of turns doing two actions and not taking any stress for it. If you don't need your second action for anything else, you can just TL+F and hammer them with your HLC, so sometimes it ends up doing the work of the FCS for you.

I think you are losing out without sensors

FCS is strong, but Aggressors are just so much easier to handle without the pre-manuever boost (especially if you're flying B-wings and IG-88B is just glaring at you all pissed off :P)

FCS + IG-88B is a godsend against high agility stuff like Soontir, though. Without him, I don't feel its worth it at all.

One build I had a thought for was to get that all-powerful defensive focus in actual combat (rather than just round 1 or so shooting). Iggy B with Marksmen, FCS, HLC and Experimental Interface. On key turns, marksmen and focus, as crazy as it sounds. If you miss, TL/Marksmen then hold the focus for return fire.

I don't know if that's good, and frankly Autothruster save an average of 3 damage per game depending on the match up, which is super worth it from a cost perspective, however in the heat of range 1-2 combat when iggy is taking the real damage, autothrusters are negligible. The way iggy flies, staying at range 3 and staying pointed at the target ship is usually unfeasible.

I'd like to try that build and see what can be done with it. I feel like Iggy comes down to a choice between action economy and survivability, and it's really hard to get both. It's a point of interest to me, as in a recent game during a tourney, I took 4 dice at range 2 on iggy and rolled blanks and eyeballs with no focus, then in the same round took two crits, both direct hits, and Iggy went from full health to dead right away.

My problem with PTL is that, to get rid of that stress, you need a green, and all the greens will put you closer to the enemy. You aren't dodging any arcs at all without losing your shots. Even if you are coming in from a flank, most ships can still turn towards you that turn if they want to focus you down. Honestly, it makes me consider adrenaline rush with FCS. Iggy wants to shoot but doesn't want to get shot back. Iggy isn't making course corrections like Soontir Fel, who wants to narrowly dodge arcs, Iggy is changing positions entirely.

The best bet is probably Adv S. with X ept and autothrusters. Maybe PTL, probably Predator or lone wolf. Perhaps the best way is to just focus on what Iggy is already good at, murdering anything that is a lower PS than he is, and let Fett worry about the rest.

Iggy D, predator, AS, AT, HLC...

Adv S. Expert-handling to barrel roll backwards then Dampeners would probably throw some people off pretty badly, even if you do wind up double stressed. Not particularly viable, but still awesome.

Adv. Sensors is obviously king on general-purpose Iggy. One day Glitterstim/Countermeasure iggy will be a thing... an amazing, one-turn-of-godmode thing.

Edit: Hear ye, hear ye, the king of arc dodgers: Iggy D (or C) with EH and EI. He can barrel-roll+boost with adv S to really escape arcs, then reveal a green to get rid of one of the stress and wind up with just 1 stress that round. Clear it next round and you can still move then br/boost. You'll typically be out of arc but still have a shot, and Iggy likes that. Problem here is, you can EH into a s-loop, ever. And your shots will typically be unmodified.

Adv S. is definitely a winner regardless. Lone Wolf, Predator and PTL are all debatable. I feel like so long as you are fine with Lone Wolf being turned off the first few rounds, it'll be very useful mid-fight.
