Thoughts on Glitterstim?

By cjnj193, in X-Wing

Hello all, just wanted to see what you all felt about Glitterstim. I really like what it can do for ships that draw lots of aggro or ships that can put out plenty of damage. Here are some of the ships I was thinking of

N'Dru Suhlak — Z-95 Headhunter 17

Lone Wolf 2

Cluster Missiles 4

Glitterstim 2

Guri — StarViper 30

Calculation 1

Advanced Proton Torpedoes 6

Advanced Sensors 3

Glitterstim 2

Virago 1

IG-88B — Aggressor 36

Fire-Control System 2

Heavy Laser Cannon 7

Glitterstim 2

For the aggressor it would certainly have more but I got lazy with it.

What do you all think? Yeah it's not the best but as it uses the illicit slot I feel it can fill another nice niche roll as an "oh poo" kinda too while simultaneously dealing out a very nice amount of damage

Well, to make it truly strong, you want it to be on a ship that throws a lot of dice, with the ability to get rid of re-rolls.

IG88 would like a word with you :D

Glitterstim may be the card I'm most looking forward to right now. Timing will be key, but I can see it being used to deliver brutal range 1 assaults before shrugging off most, if not all of the return fire.

Boba could be a good candidate. He wants to get into range 1 anyway, so you'll be sure to get maximum damage, and you will be able to use his ability to reroll any blanks. Guri is a little less synergistic, as her ability is essentially useless that round unless you give her something else to do with the Focus token (and no, Deadeye & Torpedo is not an acceptable something else). Xizor might get better use out of it, as he can move later in the round to ensure good shots. Talonbane will be a particularly good one, I think. Get up close, hand out 5 dice with TL & Glitterstim, then sit back behind a better version of Luke's ability.

I agree 100% with your listed uses, and I'll add Boba Fett (any build, really). He gets bonuses for charging in, and Glitterstim lets him take a massive amount of short-range fire.

The thing to remember about Glitterstim is that its activation is not an action, so you can use it if you're stressed, blocked, or flew over an asteroid.

Glitterstim seems alright, but it has the issue of competing with both Dampeners - one of the best panic buttons in the game, and a point cheaper to boot - and Feedback Array, which is not as flexible but can be devastating in the hands of a good pilot.

The illicit slot seems like it might develop the EPT problem, where one really excellent & cheap upgrade option kind of dominates the selection.

Yeah I have absolutely no idea how I didn't put scum boba on that list, but yeah I think this card is going to be surprisingly powerful, plus there are probably some other good synergies between other cards as well. If only sycks could take illicits, I would love to see the hilarity while using Laetin A'shera to dodge an entire tie swarm haha

How exactly is IG-88 supposed to use glitterstim... can droids even get high?

Not getting the love for this card.

It's basically a RecSpec that costs you a stress token to use it (although, granted, doesn't actually take an action), but you only get one use out of.

I'm not sure that's worth the one-point discount. (I'm unconvinced by the 'lasts the whole round' vs the 'last two uses' difference - I've finished plenty of rounds with a RecSpec...indeed, the VAST majority of them...with one or both focus tokens still on the ship. Those results only come up 25% of the time!)

That just goes to show that it's not really a drug, and the X Wing Miniatures Game does not encourage narcotics use.

Ok so not a drug, just a powerful stimulant. Still don't see it doing much for a droid.

Go back to the "doesn't actually take an action" bit. It's like a discounted version of Push the Limit + Recon Specialist, except that it has a higher ceiling than Recon Specialist, and unlike PTL it can be triggered even if you didn't get an action that turn. It's a very powerful upgrade.

To be fair, another bonus of this card is the accessibility of it, rather than using up a crew slot, which are generally not too common, it only requires the illicit, which can be used on most ships and while as mentioned before May not be the most ideal "oh snap" card it is a controllable offensive/defensive tool as well, which can lead into some devastating range 1 attacks

I do agree however that if one had to choose between the 2, recon spec is probably the better choice in most cases

Well, maybe it's ethanol-based...

It's mined on Kessel, and produced in total darkness by energy spiders.
Maybe it just gives droids the Kessel Runs?

I don't think it's very comparable to Rec Spec, honestly. Double focus is unlikely to be what you spend Glitterstim on most of the time.

Lots of eyeballs after a boost alongside a crit? Time to toss Glitterstim. Need to push through one last point of damage and the eyeball is sitting there? Glitterstim. One of the Aggressor twins going to fall unless you can convert the green eyeballs into evades? Yup, the 2 point Glitterstim just saved you.

It has a much wider scope - the ability to get double focused when you need it / want it is just icing on the cake.

I'm just not sure I could live without Dampeners.

I'm imagining a bunch of Scum pilots just going to autopilot and snorting a whole load of glitterstim mid-dogfight.

I like it too, good observations gang.

:)

my thoughts on glitterstim is that I can't read that text on this card

hurts my eyes :(

You can only trigger it at the start of the combat phase, so I don't think its as versatile as you believe.

Oh, quite right; you do have to gamble it away.

Hm. I still think it's quite good, but that certainly means I'd be leaving it aside.

my thoughts on glitterstim is that I can't read that text on this card

"At the start of the Combat phase, you may discard this card and receive 1 stress token. If you do, until the end of the round, when attacking or defending, you may change all of your eye results to boom or swoosh results."

I had been thinking this card might be good in co junction with Countermeasures, but...

Man, I do not get Countermeasures. It's the same price as Stealth Device, but gets discarded after 1 round of use.

2 points for that? At least its not unique

I think people have already mentioned some interesting applications. I don't see this being worth it at all on anything less than an elite pilot/ship because it's going to jack up the prices of points efficient pilots like pirates for very unreliable gain. You slap it on Boba or something, though, and you're in for a wild ride.

Depending on how effective it ends up being, this illicit well either turn you into Luke Skywalker or Xizor for one turn depending on how willing your opponent is to shoot the buffed ship. Either way, you're coming out ahead ^_^

obviously, also pairs well with LW and anything that attacks multiple times (Cluster Missiles? I guess the OP already figured that out).

Spoiling the upgrade right under the PS 9 Kihrax pilot might also be FFG's way of giving us a not-so-subtle hint :P

I think it fits perfectly with a Scum feel. An unskilled pilot using some stuff to aim his missiles better in hope of survival and receiving a kill-bonus! ;)

A simple PS1 Z95, some clusters, some stims and go!

18 points of mayhem, but if you lose them you won´t really mind.

You probably still have your Star Viper of Kirhaxz flying around. :D

Countermeasures effing sucks.
