Star Wars Battlefront

It is an amazing time to be a star wars fan...

"...This time there's ketchup on the fries. Pre-order now."

$80 pre-order? $40 expansions to give you what should've in the core game??? Why not! Make that $$$ EA!

11/17 noooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Can't wait that long........

Star Wars Battlefront Episode III: A Lost Hope.

Some of the things from past Battlefront games that are not included:

  • Galactic conquest
  • all the past maps (only 8 folks)
  • No clone wars (not a big fan but dorid dekas were fun even if they were OP)
  • No space battles (again not a fan of the BF2 space battles. I didn't like the lay out of the 5 room capital ships. I was hoping for better but then again I don't call not including it better).
  • Unpiloted AT-AT. That s right folks they are just on rails asking to be bombed.

I want this to be good but history with EA and Dice and the writing on the walls tell me otherwise. :(

But hey even if it ends up sucking, we still got X-wing ;)

I would bet that the named characters will be DLC-only content as well. :|

But don't worry, I'm sure the Clone Wars content and functional AT-ATs will be graciously provided as an additional 30-60 dollar purchase somewhere down the line.

Where was it mentioned that AT-Ats will be on rails? I can't seem to find it.

I heard that 2nd DLC will introduce two great features:

- ability to reload weapon - you no longer have to die to refresh ammo count

- ability to aim - no longer spray and pray, you can aim precisely now !!!

It's sad I know.

There seems to be a trend with AAA of the last few years to make a game then hold back parts of the game behind pay walls.

Just look at evolve, it would be a **** fine game if it didn't have so much pointless dlc like pay $2USD for a blue skin on your gun that is hardly noticeable

Or pay silly money on top off the cost of the game to get the most OP monster

It's just getting silly now.

You... You can't pilot AT-ATs?

WTF.

Seems like DICE isn't doing a good job convincing us fans that this is the Star Wars game we need to play. I was really excited at first but now I'm not sure. The only reason I might still get the game is for the Battle of Jakku.

Also AT-AT on rails is a real bummer. Did they feel that freely piloting a towering walker of destruction would be too OP and unfair to the other the opposing team? If so aren't they able to find other ways to balance the firepower of an AT-AT without restricting its movement? I'd really like to know why.

It says it's a design decision and I believe that: making them walk freely wouldn't be hard.

The thing is, you could do that in both Battlefronts and you still ended up walking in a straight line unless you started parking them on command posts or things.

Plus you wouldn't be able to turn it in the Endor forest anyway. No, I'm fairly sure if they've put AT-ATs on rails it's to make it play better, not to save time (it wouldn't) or money (also wouldn't.)

EDIT: A bit of research later, turns out its on rails because it's an objective. Its a gamemode where the Empire has to advance it to an objective and the Alliance has to stop it before it gets there. Sounds like Payload in TF2, just with a giant heavily armed assault walker instead of a bomb.

To be honest though, a rails AT-AT really isn't that different from an off-rails AT-AT except you can't do derpy things with it. If you want to freely run around and chase people down the AT-AT was never the vehicle for it. (That's what the AT-ST's for, which hopefully will actually have some speed in this one)

It's still super silly, it only takes away from our options. options we've had.

Also, removing space. that's like taking Soul Edge out of the Soul Calibur series. What's the sodding point?

I don't get why everyone's so upset about space, space sucked in Battlefront 2, and once you've been into the modding tools you can see why. All the AI fighters fly on rails which is why they never hit you, the boarding craft have no code so they only work if you fly them, and once the illusion's off they're just not that fun. It's either fly in circles hitting hardpoints with bombs, shoot at fighters on rails that don't stand a chance at hitting you or ground combat on a tiny map with two classes.

Space wasn't in Battlefront 1, and it was better for it because it got air battles instead.

The new Battlefront also has air battles. Why?

It means they get to set their battles over the planets they've spent god knows how long designing rather than just a starfield skybox and that starfighters can take advantage of terrain features like canyons.

You... You can't pilot AT-ATs?

WTF.

It doesn't say that. It says they're on rails: when you walk forward it follows a preset path, but I'd imagine you still have fully armed and operational control of the head.

Well that's not entirely fair. The first game didn't have space combat either and it was a great game.

Though I can see it now "pre-order now for an extra $50 and you get the day one DLC for free"......

You don't get why we are caught up on the lack of space battles??

Really?

Maybe because this is STARwars...

I remember the tech demo from the original SW BF 3, it had you jump into an x-wing then fly around a bit shooting stuff on the ground then fly up into space and battle up there.

No sky box.

All free flowing.

And that was back in 2008 (ish)

Just imagine what DICE could do now if EA let them

I can understand the design decision: the AT-AT is a mobile spawn point. If you let players wak around with it, guess what happens? Pubbie griefers get in the cockpit and do their damndest to ruin the experience (and you can probably do a fine job of it when you're piloting the spawn point around).

But I still don't agree with it. There's always a better solution than, "Disable the feature,"

I'm most irritated by the 'gameplay footage' (lolz), though. I hate that this is the new normal; show total disdain for your audience by showing them pre-rendered crap and then trying to pretend without technically lying about it that it's legit.

"Oh, the game really looks like this right now..."

Yeah, if by 'game' you mean 'unfinished, not-yet-downscaled assets, which you showcased via pre-rendered footage,' then I totally believe you. The game will not look anywhere near that good, and the framerate will be nothing like what is seen in the trailer. Why the Hell do you have so little confidence in the actual product you're delivering?

Lucasarts had it's own problems, but I remember when The Force Unleashed was being developed and they used the game's actual models, texturing, physics engine and even some of the backend stuff like their asset management system for their marketing campaign. They built hype for the game without so much as bending the truth about how it would look or what it would play like. What ever happened to that model of salesmanship?

One thing that upsets me is the inevitable DLC. CoD and Battlefield can milk me for my money, sure. But EA/DICE know they can milk MILLIONS from Star Wars fans. I just wish there was some honest, fly casual, "we're gonna actually sell you the whole game and not squeeze your wallet for DLC content that should've already been there" marketing plan for Battlefront. But we all know that ain't happening in this galaxy.

I hate to say it, but get used to it.

This is the way triple A games are made now.

The best plan is to not pre-order (unless it comes with some sweet physical stuff that we must haves) and don't buy day one. Just wait a bit. Other wise your just paying for the privilege to beta test.

I'm just not buying it. It's not Star Wars.

It's just a money milking gamble. They're asking us to pre-order without showing the entire public, gameplay.

You don't do that. Shoot, even 1313 and First Assault showed gameplay before anything else and they didn't even get finished.

I regret that we didn't see 1313...

Or Imperial commando.

or XvT 2.

Or Jar Jar Vs the World Eaters, where you get to play Kharn.

One of these I may have made up.

So the AT-AT will work like the AC-130 in Battlefield? Non-PC controlled, but allows you to man the guns and you are able to spawn out of it. Correct? The thought of fast-roping out the side of an AT-AT is pretty awesome.

I do hope we get a true space combat sim.
