Couple of things I'm not too clear on with squadrons

By jboweruk, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Okay, firstly;

With the 'Minefield' mission card - does this in any way affect squadrons? As I read it I'd say not; since it does say ships but doesn't make it clear whether for purposes a squadron is a ship.

Critical hits - I'm sure this has been discussed but can't find it anywhere - Against squadrons you don't resolve the 'effects' but... Is it still a 'hit'. I think yes as if you roll say 3 crits on a ship, you still take 3 damage or shields from it. So I'm guessing RAW crit = hit except against squadrons that's it, no more effects, so for example if I attack a Tie Squadron and get 3 crits I kill it.

Thanks in advance.

Regarding the first question

A ship and a squadron are two distinct definitions. They are not interchangeable. If a card refers to "ships" and not "squadrons" then it means exactly that.

As for critical hits, see the rules reference, pg 2, attacks, under resolve damage:

-if the attacker or defender is a squadron, the damage is the sum of all (hit) icons

-if the attacker AND defender are ships, the damage is the sum of all (hit) and (critical hit) icons

To add to what willismaximus said, squadrons with the Bomber ability DO count crit icons (and resolve a crit effect) but they are the only squadrons that do. This is what makes Bomber such a great ability.

Slight clarification: don't Bombers only count crits against attacks on ships (as opposed to other squadrons)?

Correct. The bomber rule says "when attacking a ship".

Yeah, I meant if a ship attacks a squadron; do crits simply count as 'hits' like in X-Wing? I know you don't resolve the 'effects' against a squadron but is it still a hit.

No.

Reference Rules, p2 "Attack"

"If the attacker or defender is a squadron, the damage is the sum of all 'Hit' icons

If the attacker and defender are ships, the damage is the sum of all 'Hit' and 'Crit' icons"

A Crit symbol is basically a blank against squadrons unless a special ability says otherwise.
