Wave 7 had Competitive Epic in mind

By J1mBob, in X-Wing

Wave 7 was announced in conjunction with the promise of support for Competitive Epic tournaments and is timed to coincide closely with the release of the Raider. I understand that this forum is mostly focused on the 100 point death match, but I believe this wave was heavily tested in the Epic format.

In my admittedly limited experience with Epic game play, one of the problems I witnessed was how my attempts at conducting a classic "bombing run" on the capital ships usually resulted in my bombers spending several rounds close enough to the Corvette to get rammed by a competent capital ship pilot. The K-Wing SLAM and the Punisher native boost both seem intended to help with this.

Additionally, notice that both of the new super bombers have an Agility of 1? Now the incoming threat to the capital ship is also the same ship that the primary has the best chance of hitting, even at Range 5 due to the recent capital ship primary weapon fix. And I'm willing to bet that primary weapon fix came about during play testing of these new bombers in the Epic format.

On a related but separate note, another frustration for many is the uselessness of the X-Wing torpedo upgrade slot. In the lore, torpedoes weren't used in dogfights but instead on capital ships (and Death Stars, of course!) When you're attempting to focus fire a Corvette, would it make more sense to pay for torps on X-Wings, compared to in any 100-point situation? Or does the action economy ruin the torpedo attack on a capital ship just as much in Epic as in dogfights?

I agree.

And that is all I have to say about that.

Just talking lore here and just from memory...

But wasn't the X-Wings attacking the Death Star with Torps ONLY because the Y-Wings were all destroyed in the attempt. Perhaps the X-Wing has a torp but may not have ever been considered as the go-to weapon. Y-Wings and TIE Bombers were the ordnance platforms. I know some are saying Z-95 were missile carriers but I'm referring to the movies. And there are some decent missiles that have a good chance of hitting now. It is worth the points? I don't know.

Has anyone tried a Z-95 and a Homing Missile in Epi? Concussion and Homing missiles both double the Z-95 attack strength for one pass and for 17 or 18 points (Munitions Failsafe) it's a guaranteed hit. At 18 points that's a mini swarm with enough points for an upgraded pilot. How about:

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Homing Missiles (5)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Homing Missiles (5)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Homing Missiles (5)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)
Homing Missiles (5)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

Airen Cracken (19)
Swarm Tactics (2) - or Squad Leader (2)
Homing Missiles (5)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

Total: 99

Plus, even though they are low PS if you can position that is still one heck of an alpha. The biggest problem will, of course, be getting a Target Lock.

If you're suggesting the Z-95's for an alpha strike on a capital ship, I wouldn't bother with Munitions Failsafe. Whatever you shoot, it's almost certainly going to hit. Even more so for Homing since you don't discard the TL.

I do want to know what those Plasma Torps can do... They might make the X-Wing into the versatile ship they're supposed to be. Get the capital ship strike in and then dogfight. But of course, whatever the Plasma Torp does for the X-Wing, it does it twice for the B-Wing... And the second Plasma Torp can be even cheaper with use of Extra Munitions!
