Question about line of sight and movement

By leewroy, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi!

Well, the main reason I never played too much of the first edition was the set up time and gameplay lenght. Not to count some rules that I totally disagree.

This issues seems to be all corrected in the second edition. But I think there is still room for changes. I totally disagree about the way the game threts the line of sight and the diagonal movement. Being able to shoot between too obstacles, or scape between a corner and a monster doesn't look right in my opinion.

I wonder if there was a kind of 'update' about these (or other) rules that you guys know. If not, do you take these rules or make something different?

Thanks in advance!

There is no update to Descent's LoS rules, however I highly recommend giving the Imperial Assault line of sight rules a try.

They are fully compatible with Descent 2.0, and I've switched over to using them entirely in all my campaign and co-op games, to player approval.

I haven't detected any serious balance issues with them, but I do find it weakens certain hero and monster abilities like Army of Death, Sweep and Break the Rune as far less figures are now in LoS than before.

I also think it *slightly* favors the OL over the Heroes, since the OL has more figures in play and are more often in a position where they can force the heroes to advance on their fortified position than the other way around.

However, the pros far outweigh the cons in my view, as it makes cover actually useable and provides new strategic options for both sides.

If you're interested in trying out these rules, they are listed in the Imperial Assault Rules Reference under Line of Sight:

I´ll check this, dude. Thanks a lot. :)

There is no real update. Two house rules, or house-rule-interpretations that I use are that line of sight and adjacency cannot be traced through any solid black border line, including corners. And that while line of sight and adjacency for the purposes of melee attacks can be traced while touching the corner of a red obstacle space, adjacency for the purposes of movement cannot. This contradicts some of the official rulings that have been handed down. But it makes more sense, and seems more consistent to me. Also, because this applies equally to all figures, it does not upset the balance of the game.

Well, IMO you're totally right. Even with the Imperial assault sules mentioned by the friend above, I can't take these rules as realistic. I'm still waiting for my game to arrive, and 'll make some experiments. But hardly I'll stick to these rules, unless, somehow, it makes the unbalanced for one side.

Thanks for replying.
