I played my first game trying out 3 big ships with Imperials the other week, and took pictures throughout the battle. I didn't manage to get a picture after every single movement, but I think the general flow of the battle is easy enough to see. The first picture taken was after the first move of a VSD and Nebulon B, as you can see they are a bit ahead of their deployment zones.
The mission was fire lanes. I as the Imperial player placed the three objectives roughly along the center line of the board in ways that might favor where I thought my VSD would end up, my opponent moved the tokens a bit toward himself. As you can see the three Victorys slow rolled up at an angle, attempting to be able to bring both side and front arcs to bear. The rebel Nebulon Bs huddled up and concentrated their firepower on the most promising VSD target while the lone cr90 flew around the side to contest the far objective and get behind the star destroyers.
This game ended up coming pretty close as you can see in the 15th image of 17 I have got my Star Destroyers in a not awesome location, both flank VSD being far out of range to use their black dice and not in a position to even focus fire on the same Nebulon B. The Imperials at this point had about double the victory points from the mission objective thanks to the large close range firepower, but my position was slipping. The center VSD had taken far more damage from the Nebulon B's red dice than it had dished out in return, and had suffered a number of crits thanks to Dodonna taking away its ability to fire long range, taking a double damage crit or two, and having its defense tokens made unable to ready. The VSD near the bottomp of the field was full on shields and health which I did not expect, and ended up with several very wasted Engineering orders.
The Nebulon Bs on the other hand were right where they wanted to be and took out the center VSD while leaving the top one limping on 4 or 5 damage with no side shields at the end, with the side arc being hammered by the 3 Nebulons and the cr90. This top VSD, my flagship, was also much further from the action than I thought and was not on a course to correct this any time before the game ended. Had the game gone on indefinitely I am fairly certain the top VSD would fall in short order leaving the last one to fight a cr90 with only a couple hull left, and 2 Nebulon Bs which had only suffered one damage each.
My TIE fighter screen suffered pretty heavily at the hands of the superior x-wings, but bought enough time that their assault on the final weak VSD was cut off by the game end. RIP brave TIE fighter meat shields.
Overall this was a fun and close game, and the first I had played with objectives. I didn't fly my VSD in close enough formation to make use of their black dice, and the rebels successfully threaded the needle and took out the center VSD while contesting objectives all around from the center of the board. Victory ultimately went to the Imperials thanks to objective points; rebels had done significantly more damage to the capital ships.
I hope this report was interesting or useful to anyone who hasn't played much yet, and in the future I'll try to get better and more thorough pictures of the play-by-play.
