Scum and Villainy Podcast: FAQing fun

Oooh, new one.

You should try to get another Designer Interview now Wave 7's announced: the previous one was incredible.

I spoke with Alex Davey when I was in Minnesota. I did say we should talk about the new wave whenever it was going to be announced. Guess I've got some emailing to do...

I totally agree with the turret needing nerf. I go the other way then was suggested. Instead of making it range 1 and two only, I would say 360 ships gain no bonus attack die for +1 range, unless it's in your primary firing arc.

I do like your idea too

As for play maps. I know it was about the money, but they do have some merit about measuring and knowing maps.

I went to a tournament, where they were using local maps, which I had never played on, but almost everyone else at the store had. I found out players placed asteroids in specific spots on the the maps, because they knew what type of maneuvers they could pull off without hitting them and how far other map pictures were from each other.

During our game, I made a 2 hard bank assuming the other guy would hit an asteroid if he did a two bank. After the game he mentioned to me, that he knew where he was and that he could easily make the 2 bank to avoid the asteroid because of it.

So it was an unfair advantage for that player, who was familiar with the map and pictures on it, knowing what maneuvers could work where, while I was unsure.

I understand FFG allowing you to bring your own FFG map and replace a local map, because of this situation.

Fully support limiting primary weapon attacks that are out of arc to range 1-2, although I would be shocked if they actually did that. Dash's cannons would be unaffected by this, since their turret ability is granted by the Outrider Title, not the YT-2400s turreted primary attack. I don't even think turrets are that powerful right now, but I also don't think they need to exist in the game in their current form as omni-shooters. If capping their range pushes them out of competitive play, I don't think anyone would really miss them all that much, the gameplay provided from omni-turrets is poor.

Super Dash and the Y-Wings's donut hole create really good gameplay moments where a skilled player can position themselves in that blind spot and gain a huge advantage. The Falcon and the Decimator lack these gameplay elements where a stronger player can punish a weaker player flying these ships with superior positioning, which is why a lot of players hate them so much. The skill reward in a game with a turret is completely one-sided to the player with the turret. It's impossible for the player without a turret to skillfully engineer a situation where they can shoot at the turret without getting shot back, the only reward you get for flying skillfully against a turret is a dice-fest where you and the opponent throw dice at each other to see who wins, which is not the kind of reward players want for their skill.

And no, this would not make Mangler Dash broken because Mangler Dash sucks in a meta that is infested with autothrusters. Because the Mangler Cannon can never get a range 1 bonus, it will never be able to push over the top of 3 defense dice + autothrusters the way a Falcon or Decimator can.

Am I the only who couldn't understand Theorist? Between his mike cutting out and his whispering, made me really sad since I love hearing his insights the most on the show.

No, I had the same problem. Sounds like either a stream issue (maybe he's Skyping in) or possible a Noise Gate on his mic that has its threshhold set too high. Also could be the echo cancelling. Is he using a headset, or the built-in mics on his laptop?

Any of you guys coming down to Tulsa for Regional?

I think we should let the wave 6 and phantom FAQ settle a bit before declaring turrets in need of a fix.

Do you guys have a PayPal set up? I love the show, and really want to donate to the "buy Theorist a new microphone" fund.

It's such a shame for poor quality to drag down what is otherwise a brilliant podcast.

OP or not, I could see changing turrets just because they are boring.

My change really has a minimal effect, except that at range 1 he must fly his ship better, sure he can turn an run and still shoot, but he won't get the +1 die at range 1, and getting behind him will have a major effect. It forces the turret player to fly better. That's what the Phantom nerf did and hopefully, they will have a turret nerf too. Simple and effective. And just like every other ship in the game.

Theorist's mic definitely sounds like automatic gain control or something like that kicking in.

Hilarious.

This time we let Sozin attempt to do recording so I can't be blamed! VINDICATION!!!

As I said in the cast I think the change to phantoms will actually help take out turrets. The best ships vs turrets were weak v phantoms.

As others said, Theorist is really hard to hear most of the time. I wear noise cancelling headphones while hearing podcasts, and I still wasn't able to hear him. I really feel like I missed a lot of wisdom coming from him :)

Otherwise, really like the podcast! Keep it up!

Bear in mind Kelvan, I would quite like to donate to the show regardless. I know it is a lot of work to put out the show and anything we as fans can do help out I am all for.
