Guessing Base Pilot Costs for Wave 7

By Stone37, in X-Wing

Going by what we know thus far, I've been putting reason (based on current ships) to the cost of the base pilots of Wave 7. Here are my thoughts:

YV-666 - 24 - 28

I base my guess on this being a shuttle clone (expecting the same dial or close to it).

Kihraxz Fighter - 21

This was the easiest to reason a base point score for. It's an X-wing for S&V. Cobra (PS 9) even has the same cost as Wedge. Same actions as the X-wing and similar upgrades. (The illicit is the S&V astromech in this case)

K-wing - 22

This is a Y-wing/B-wing hybrid. It has one more shield than a Y-wing but I'm expecting a dial closer to a B-wing. If this ship could naturally move quickly, it wouldn't need the SLAM action. I don't think it will have the red 1 turns (I'm not expecting 1 turns at all for this ship) but I don't think its dial will just consist of a 1 or a 2 straight green either... hence a more B-wing like dial.

Tie Punisher - 16 - 17

This is a Tie Bomber with 3 shields and only 1 evade dice. It will also have a stinted Tie Bomber dial too, to help keep the cost down. It needs to be cheap in order to leave room for the upgrades this ship needs to be effective.

Those are my guesses. How about yours?

FFG has been pretty consistent with their costing of base generics. If you just subtracted the PS difference from the top pilot to base model you are almost always on target (+/- 1 point). When the top pilot has an amazing ability you usually discount the base model 1 extra point. I think all these ships might get that discount. Thus my guess is...

YV-666: 28 points.

Kihraxz: 21 points.

K-Wing: 22 points.

Punisher: 21 points.

I think your estimation for Punisher at 16-17 points is far too low. The 3 extra health over standard bomber is all shields. The loss of a green die is out weighed by boost IMO. You get extra bomb slot and the beloved systems slot. This ship is a beast. Even with a mediocre dial, it will be powerful ship.

I have another prediction. The K-Wing and Punisher expansions will be $20 packs like the Star Viper.

Major Rhymer (PS 7) costs 26 points. The PS 7 pilot reviled for the Punisher costs 27 points. This leads me to believe this new bomber will be kept on the cheap, just as its predecessor was. If the base cost was 21, that's not much of a jump from PS 2 with no pilot ability to PS 7 with an ability and an EPT slot. I fully admit I could be wrong about this one though, as this is exactly the case with the Defender. I think many of us also feel this is one of the Defender's major problems. It's over cost. Hoping FFG doesn't make another Defender "error" in the base cost of a new ship.

I see your point. I also forgot Bomber had BR which is a lateral trade with boost. Even so, I'm sure it won't be 16 points. Perhaps more like 20.

Rhymer is also held up as a perfect example of how to render a pilot useless by totally overcosting him. He pays something like 5 points for his ability over a generic, and has never seen serious competitive play. I seriously doubt FFG will make the same mistake again.

The Punisher's best comparison is probably the B-wing. Do you really think a B-wing with +1 overall health, boost instead of barrel roll, and 1 less attack would cost 5-6 less points? I sure don't. It would be a little cheaper, yes, but not by that much.

The B wing has three attack die and I'm going to guess a better dial. You can fly a B wing naked, bombers not so much. FFG had always over valued green dice. a B wing only costs 1 more point than an X wing. If anything, I think your comparison to a B wing helps prove the points I'm making. Max, I'm betting the base ship costs 18, but I'm expecting 17.
