Some more custom ships

By Utar, in Star Wars: Armada

Here are the custom ship sizes scaled with the current FFG Armada ships. These images are scaled so that if you print them on a full 8.5" x 11" piece of paper the ships will be actual size.

I look forward to getting all Mel's awesome custom ships. Here are some other variants I have created...

Interceptor IV Frigates! HOORAY! :D

Thanks, I'll try to post some pics of the physical ships tonight.

Are the various assault frigates and other ships (from the taskforce4222 blog) going to be available at some point?

Cannot stress how awesome your work is!

When the Interceptor Frigate and IPV go up, I'll be placing an order straight away...I love those ships!

Yes the assault frigate MK I (and variants) and the related dreadnaughts are some of my favorites. The designs are basically done, I am just waiting to get the Wave I ships to confirm how large they should be.

They should be up at the shapeways address below; if not I screwed something up.

Here are some fighters...

That modified corvette is tempting...

If the models were in scale with the VSD (1/6417), Id get some.

Tis indeed up now Ser, thank you very much!

AND you did a Rihk! You're awesome!!

Have you considered splitting out the fighters into smaller packs? :)

Ha, great minds think alike! I am working on a 1/7000 scale fleet. That should be roughly in scale with the VSD and the ISD for those who want to use a true scale. Of course the trade off is that the corvettes are rather small. Here are some pics...

Yes, I can split up the fighters. What are you looking for like 6 each of each type?

Yes, something like that would be perfect, as I can see myself going for lots of Rihkxyrks come payday! :)

What do suggest for detail quality? From your pics it looks like your models lack the "fuzzy" quality that affects a lot of the custom 3d models. Yours look fantastic and I'm sorely tempted to get some of them but the fuzzy model syndrome has kept me away from the custom stuff in general. Do you have any painted examples?

Utar:

Please pick up the white curtesy phone for a PM in your in mail box...

You have to remember the fuzzy look is usually do to a material selection, usually flexible white. You should print in no less then Frosted Ultra Detail or the now available Frosted Extreme Detail to eliminate the fuzz.

By the way, would love the Missile Boats in a 6 pack.

I believe the fuzzy look you mention comes from 3d prints in the "White Strong and Flexible" material which is cheaper but lacks detail, has a rough surface, and is very hard (difficult to drill into or sand). I prefer the detailed plastics as a printing option. They are a little more expensive but worth it if the design is detailed enough. The down side of detail plastics is that they are brittle. That's why I usually cast mine in resin.

I do have a question about the Plastics.

When you say the detail plastics are brittle, how brittle are we talking about? Shatter like glass brittle? A good fall its basically ruined brittle? No pointy bit or long white is safe brittle? Don't mean to derail, but I was curious about using this service for an stuff like yours and some idea's one of them being a large build. However I wanted to know just how bad the fine detail plastic was for longevity.

Thank man.

The detail plastic is fine, dropping it off the table will result in thin parts breaking. I have 100s of printed models and only a couple have broken. Generally due to my own stupid mistakes. As playing pieces the Frosted Ultra Detail is fine.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but let's say I'd like to purchase some of your nice Assault Frigate sculpts when they become available. Would you suggest the extreme frosted detail? Are the "detailed plastics" you referred to the same thing?

Wes is correct. They are are generally okay for gaming longevity if you take care of them. Any small/narrow parts such as antenna, weapon barrels, etc. has the biggest risk of breaking off.

That is a really good question. Since extreme detail is new I haven't tried it. But I've used ultra detail for years and I am pretty happy with the detail level. Not sure you will get the "bang for the buck" paying more for extreme detail but we'll see.

Extreme detail will benefit by eliminating just about any evidence of the print grain. On models as small as these, Ultra detail is fine. Basically you will not see the grit with the naked eye. Worst case, run a stiff nylon brush over your models when you get them before painting. This will remove any lose grains from the process. Just be careful around thin areas to not use too much pressure.
