Just wanted to say that this game really opens up the possibilities in epic scale of play. Tournament dog fighting is one thing and it's great. However, the possibilities for amazing things really blossoms beyond the typical 100 point cap. I think wave 7 will only solidify the experience in larger games because one may take advantage of so many options.
XWM Truly Shines in Epic Play
I LOOOOOOOOOVE Epic play. I seriously hope that the Raider release brings more interest in it. The only problem I've found with it so far, is that it's a bad idea to start an Epic game at 7 PM on a thursday night.
I very much, totally agree.
I've played some of the missions that come with the huge ships, but I've been hesitant to play epic yet for two reasons:
1. Even normal tournament style play takes me like an hour and a half to get through, so epic would require a significant time investment.
2. The Imperials don't have a huge ship yet.
So yeah, I suspect epic will become much more popular once the Raider arrives. That will probably be the only way I play from that point on.
What I like most about EPIC is that multiple battles are happening simultaneously, so you can have your squadron fly away from one battle and join another, whereas in a 100 point game that isn't possible.
Eh, I don't know if it will be the ONLY way I play (again, sometimes it's 7PM on a thursday), but it will be my preferred game type. 4 IG-2000's............. awesome.

My group is very aggressive. After the assault missile volley the survivors always end up in a super furrball.
ASSAULT MISSILES. VOLLEY. FIRE AT WILL!
AHHHHHH.
CHARGE.
DEAAAAAATH.

Tournament Play is like watching an episode of 'Rebels' or 'Clone Wars'.
It's great. It's filling. It scratches that "I want Star Wars NOW, but I've only got a few minutes" itch. It makes you sit back and wonder how they managed to stuff so much awesome into that little time - it seems like so much more time has gone past, and that's not a bad thing at all! It's incredible every time, and you are always walk away itching for the next fix.
Epic Play, with a group of close friends at your place, is like watching one of the Original Trilogy movies for the first time.
It...it's better. It is a true experience, and can result in those moments so amazingly thematic that you them remember for years afterwards. What it does is open new worlds of ideas, gives you new dreams. It feels so much more like the impact the OT movies delivered. (And I liked the prequels well enough! But they didn't exactly deliver THE FEELS in the way that the OT movies, and X-Wing Epic Play, can do.)
oh come on. the space battles were pretty good in the prequels.
and the lightsaber duels were way better, even with the obvious sword parrying in Ep1.
like seriously. the best lightsaber duel in Ep6 is two kids waving a ******* stick at each other back and forth. go look. Vader vs Luke after he finds out about Leia.

I believe I mentioned that I do like the prequels. I mean, seriously.
But, c'mon, as epic is the opening sequence of Episode III was (and it was epic!), do you really feel anything there, akin to Vader picking off Y-Wings and X-Wings one by one as they attempt the trench run in Episode IV? There was a real sense of rising action, there, and increasing risk...

I'd like to take a moment to educate everyone on why the lightsabre fights are so different in the two trilogies. In the OT, saber fighting was based on Kendo, aka as if they were each wielding a katana. It was also a more realistic representation of katana combat than some other movies that sport the things.
The PT saber combat was based on French fencing, wielding rapiers. The rapier is a much more swift and flexible weapon, and the combat is much flashier to match. They also went with the flashy combat to show the mastery over their weapons the Jedi/Sith of the era had, where to compare Vader was missing all his limbs and could no longer move nimbly enough to properly use the forms and Luke didn't have the training. It is unintentionally a very good representation of what was lost with the fall of the Jedi.

Have you ever fenced? It's not quite elegant...it's more -poke-..-poke-...-counter and poke oh kark we both got stabbed but since I kinda blocked your poke mine counts as a point-
Needless to say I don't much like fencing
I'm not disagreeing with you, but they did have master level fencing instructors for the saber fighting in the PT.

WHAT HE SAID.
Second, still just look at Luke losing control vs Vader. go look now. Go. Karking.
I mean its just. Prequel duels were better. Much more entertaining. ... I'd dare say the music was better to during the duels. Duel of the Fates? Battle of the Heroes?
I dunno, I don't think the opener of Ep3 is supposed to be really risky and gut wrenching. Its slightly, but we kind of learn that later. The Emperor isn't ever quite in danger... So, its kind of weird. Its more of a expose scene.
I must admit, the emotional power of the OT space battles and duels was top notch. Can't bash Luke vs Vader for not being dramatic.
I'll take the raw emotional weight of Luke furiously lashing out at Vader and actually trying to kill him over any of the dance routines in the prequels any day. The way the music swells up and Luke is just bashing away at the end, all finesse and control gone - so much more powerful and entertaining. The Ep3 duel goes on for so long and gets so outlandish it actually becomes boring, and the fancy choreography is utterly detached from the supposed emotions of the characters. All the PT duels end badly too, with the loser suddenly holding the idiot ball. The best duel of the PT is probably Qui Gon and Maul in the desert.
